For this assignment, you will be considering how we can meet sustainability goals while dealing with infrastructure from the past. We have cities which were not built according to the principles of sustainability, dams that provide clean energy while creating other environmental and social problems, then there are pipelines which carry crude oil and natural gas – both fossil fuels which need to be phased out.
Your task is to comment on what you think we should do with this infrastructure over coming decades. What should we continue to use, seeing as it has been built, what should we retrofit to make it more sustainable, and what should we just outright dismantle?
To do this, you need some parameters.
First off, sustainability is not perfectly defined in this course, nor is there consensus of the meaning of the term in scientific and academic circles. We will employ what is called a “working definition.” This one comes from the World Commission on Environment and Development (Brundtland Commission) which runs as the
“development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”
This concise definition encompasses environmental, economic and social sustainability. It recognizes that the world’s poor, who have not benefitted from globalization, deserve to have their own needs met today but that this cannot be done at the expense of generations to come.
Create a table like the one below. You can either write or type it out.
For the section on “action” write either “accept,” “retrofit,” or “dismantle.”
Under “supporting evidence, give at least three reasons for your choice.
You might notice that these topics are more complex than this table allows for. You can explain that in your composition. For now, do your best to categorize these topics.
You will now explore each of the areas above in a composition using the table above. Include the following sections:
Introduction – introduce the topic then answer the question – How can we meet sustainability goals while dealing with infrastructure from the past?
Cities – Explain how we can make cities sustainable, using evidence to support your position on actions that must be taken.
Dams – Explain your choice about what must be done with the world’s 50,000 large dams based on evidence from the course. You can focus on a specific region as a case study.
Pipelines – Explain what we must do with approximately 2,000,000 kilometres of pipelines in the world. You can focus on a specific region as a case study. Provide evidence.
***Use specific examples to support your observations
***You can focus on a specific region if you wish.
***Include images to help explain the main points. Include a caption and citation information.
