Free write about a character. Fiction is made up of characters, but it isn’t until
we write about them that the characters get out of our heads and begin
to have a real life of their own. (If this sounds like it verges on
mental illness, you would not be the first one to think so!)

Describe a character in the story that you are thinking of writing
for this course. If you don’t have one yet, this is a good way to find
one. If you do have one, this is a great opportunity to explore the
person.

Describe the character physically, and then start describing how she
acts. Discuss how he feels. Write about her least favorite memory from
childhood. Write about his goals in life. This is not about writing a
scene, but rather about describing this character for your own purposes
of getting to know who this per is.

This is a free write, so it
can be sloppy. The most important thing is that the details that you
generate be specific enough to make this person come to life. What? You
say she’s a fanatic about apples? Well, what kind? If there’s one thing an apple fanatic can tell you, it’s what kind of apples really float her boat.
