Sociolinguistic Factors

Because communication involves being part of a language community, it is important to understand the cultural contributions of the people with whom communication takes place. Chapter 2 of Introduction to Communication Disorders includes such information that may be useful in determining the manner in which people communicate. Consider how communication is influenced by age, gender, and ethnicity. How might sociolinguistic factors in communication be related to unique variables of cultural identity, setting, and participants? How might disorders that manifest themselves throughout a person’s life be influenced by these factors? How might a person be affected by these factors?
