Introduction:
Marriage and family therapists need to be familiar with many of the basic laws that affect families, couples, parents, and children. Although therapists should not provide legal advice, and instead recommend clients consult with legal counsel, it is important that clinicians understand some of the basic tenets and barriers in family law.
