HUM 2020 University of Central Florida Pre Socratic Philosophers Discussion
After reading chapters 4,5,6 for Week 2, reviewing the Pre-Socratic/Natural philosophers power point slides, the Dr. Campbell videos, and the two Sophie videos, complete the following:
- In a paragraph of a MINIMUM of 5 sentences, reflect on which Pre-Socratic/Natural Philosopher’s “Origin of the World” theory you feel would make sense given the time period that they live in. You may choose between Thales, Anaximander, and Anaximenes. If you are feeling adventurous and want to research a Pre-Socratic/Natural Philosopher other than these three I say go for it! There were many others besides these three but they are the most famous historically. Try to imagine living in their time, some three thousand years ago – forget all of the technology and science we have at our finger tips today, and imagine why their origins theory would make sense back then (25 points)
- In a paragraph of a MINIMUM of 5 sentences, and after watching the video “Who is Hilde?”, write your first thoughts on what you would do if you received a postcard in the mail the way Sophie did; a postcard addressed to someone else, but somehow just happens to mention your own name on the message!! How would you react? Would you try to locate this person? Would you call a family member or a friend? Would you call the police? If you discovered that there was no dangerous or malice intent behind the postcard, would you try to pursue who is behind this or try to forget it occurred (25 points)

Letter from Dad
The novel explains that Sophie’s father works overseas most of the year. This video is a scene of she and her mother receiving a letter from Sophie’s father. In this scene, and suggested in the novel, it is clear that Sophie is struggling with the fact that her father is absent in her life. She also continues to ponder the questions she has received.
After you watch this video, watch the next video called “Who is Hilde” within this module. It will contribute toward the continuing conversation we are all having and will have throughout the semester.

Who is Hilde?
In the novel, besides the two mysterious letters with the two questions, Sophie also receives a postcard from a man wishing his daughter Hilde a happy birthday, and apologized for using Sophie as a means to wish her a happy birthday. As you are reading and thinking about who the natural philosophers were, keep the two questions Sophie received in mind as they relate to your own life:
Who are you?
Where does the world come from?
Additionally, start to think about who Hilde is and why Sophie would be receiving her mail.
This is not an assignment, just a supplement to help you as you ponder these concepts.
The video below depicts Sophie receiving Hilde’s postcard:
