Write a sentence or two for each hypothetical person and each company about how the ACA has or could impact them. Given what you know about the ACA (Affordable Care Act) what is still needed on the reform agenda?

People

1- Emily is a 9-year-old with cystic fibrosis. Her parents receive insurance from their employers but have not been able to get Emily covered under their plans. How could the ACA help her?

2- Radihka works full-time for a national retail chain that does not offer health insurance to its employees. How could the ACA help her?

3- Brian works as a free-lance actor in Philly. He is single and has no children. His annual earnings are at the nationally-defined poverty level. He does not have health insurance because he doesn’t work enough days to qualify to buy insurance through the actor’s guild. How could the ACA help him?

4- Jia is a full-time uninsured student, age 23. How could the ACA help her?

5- Christine works for a large, regional pharmaceutical company, and receives her health insurance from her employer. She has not had a Pap Smear or mammogram in 10 years because the co-pays are too high under her health plan. How could the ACA help her?

Companies

1- Denver University offers employees the option to choose among three Independence Blue Cross plans – an HMO, a PPO, and a POS. In 2012, the HMO product paid \$0.70 in claims for every dollar collected in premiums. How did the ACA help the university?

2- Maura and Chris own a successful restaurant in Center City that employs 30 people. They have not provided health insurance to their employees in the past. How could the ACA affect their business? How could the ACA affect their employees?

3- Metro is a non-profit which just had a large reduction in force (layoffs). They now have only 25 benefit eligible employees. They just received their premium renewals, and the cost is unaffordable. What choice does the ACA offer them?
