In this assignment you will investigate a set of ethical issues for the domain of intelligent agents. For the purposes of this assignment we refer to intelligent agents as being intelligent and autonomous (can be robots).
You will need to: Investigate ethical issues in the realm of intelligent agents: Find at least 2 academic articles that highlight ethical issues for intelligent agents. Use the library databases (e.g. ACM, IEEE) to find academic articles from relevant conferences and journals. Google Scholar is useful as well. We will discuss tips on how to find articles in class. Identify the ethical issues raised by the articles. Discuss the various actors in the story and identify their respective positions as they relate to the moral and ethical issues raised. Describe their possible positions using two of the moral theories discussed in class. Briefly discuss the impact that being a signatory to a prescribed Code of Ethics, such as that of the NZ Institute of IT Professionals might have (http://iitp.nz/about/ethics), and how that would affect the issues, decisions and outcomes of the identified ethical issues. Propose a framework/approach/method suitable for computing professionals for addressing the identified ethical issues. Your proposal should be useful to those developing and using intelligent agents. This approach should be more extensive than existing laws/theories e.g. Isaac Asimov's Laws of Robots (I, Robot 1950). As well as a written explanation of your approach, you should express and communicate your framework, approach or method through a suitable name and diagram. Your proposal should clearly show that the problematic ethical issues are addressed or taken into account to a stated extent – i.e. specify the scope of your proposal if required. Evaluate the contribution and state the strengths and weaknesses of your proposed framework, approach or method in either addressing or taking into account the ethical issues for your chosen topic. Lastly, discuss the ethical, professional and technical challenges that could be faced in attempts to realise your proposed framework, approach or method.
Ensure your report is well written and has a logical flow i.e. has an introduction, body and conclusion. Plagiarism will result in zero marks awarded. Make sure you cite references appropriately throughout your report.
Note: Your report will be analysed using Turnitin.
