Part 1: Communication and Relational Dynamics — Great relationships take time and effort!

There’s a wealth of information in chapter 9! It explains why we form relationships, how they develop from coming together to ending (Knapp’s model and Dialectical theory) and describe communication within these relationships. We know that healthy relationships don’t just happen. They require commitment, time, and effort. The chapter offers important insights on a variety of relationships: family, friendships, and romantic relationships. Please choose 1 of your important relationships (names may be changed to protect to innocent =). Based on the information in this chapter, please explain how this relationship was STARTED and how it DEVELOPED (relationship theories) AND what chapter strategies you use to MAINTAIN a healthy relationships (pp. 299-308). Seize opportunities to showcase your knowledge of the chapter by anchoring your response to specific information in the chapter.

Part 2: Communication in Families – Pause and Reflect

You learned from our reading that family communication shares several characteristics: it is formative, rule governed and involuntary. Consider the communication patterns within your family system.

1. Using Figure 10.1, describe the conversation orientation and conformity orientation communication patterns in your family or origin, or the family in which you now live (pp. 322-325). “How productive and satisfying is this pattern?

2. If the communication patterns from your family of origin is different from the family in which you now live, which pattern is the more productive and satisfying? If you could change one or both of these patterns, which pattern would you choose? Why?” (pp. 325)
