Topic: rock music that was influenced by jazz

The Songs:

1. Rock Around the Clock by Bill Haley and His Comets (this song is considered to be the first rock and roll hit)

We will discuss and compare the two songs.

2. Spinning Wheel by Blood, Sweat & Tears (this late 1960s group was a fusion of rock and jazz musicians)

The paper: about a page or so. You can write in an informal manner; just like speaking in class.

What to include: answer the questions the best you can. Give your reaction and opinions.

The Questions: Is each song relaxed or tense in mood? Why?

Does Rock Around the Clock sound like Swing Band Jazz? Why? Is it due to the instruments, size of the band, tempo, dynamics, or texture? Give your opinion.

Is either song suitable for dancing, listening or both? Why?

Do the voices work well for each song, yes or no, and why?

Do the performers present the song in a musical rather than in a mechanical fashion?

Which Jazz stylistic period is used during the jazz section of Spinning Wheel? Why?

Does the brief piano solo in the Krall version add or take away from the song? Why?

Which song, if any, do you like better and why?
