Jean-Baptiste-François Desoria, Portrait of Constance Pipelet, 1797 (Gallery 218), essay on 2 painting

Requirments:

3 pages (750 words)

At the beginning of the 20th century the purpose of modern art was no
longer imitation but creation. Vanguard painters sought an art free
from the constraints of mimesis (imitation of nature). The focus of art
shifted from subject matter to formal properties of line, color, shape
and composition.

Compare and contrast two paintings, one traditional and one modern.
Though the subject matter is the same, each painting reflects a unique
style. Choose three formal elements to compare and contrast in the two
paintings. Pick the formal elements that you think best support your
thesis statement. Go beyond stylistic differences to discuss differences
in purpose, aim or message as well. Please use Point-by-Point organization for your essay.  Do not do additional research for this essay.
