Week 3 – Discussion 1
Your initial discussion thread is due on Day 3 (Thursday) and you have until Day 7 (Monday) to respond to your classmates. Your grade will reflect both the quality of your initial post and the depth of your responses. Reference the Discussion Forum Grading Rubric for guidance on how your discussion will be evaluated.
Scientific Display and Place
The Royal Institute of Great Britain (www.rigb.org), founded in 1799, is the oldest, and one of the most prestigious, scientific research institutions in the world. Interestingly, part of its original mission was the dissemination of scientific knowledge to the public, a mission that was occasionally challenged by smaller museums catering to a broader audience. Reflecting upon the course text and the article by Rhys Morus, evaluate the cultural importance of scientific display during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. What does this tell us about science’s cultural, social, and experimental “place” within European culture? What does this tell us about scientific practice? How is this different from the role of science today?
Your initial post should be at least 250 words in length. Support your claims with examples from the required material(s) and/or other scholarly sources, and properly cite any references. By Day 7, respond to at least two of your classmates’ posts and one of your instructor’s.
