Literature Assignment (B)
- What is happening (the plot)
- Who is involved (the characters)
- When the events are taking place (the time period)
- Where the events are taking place (the setting)
- Why characters make the decisions that they do (the motivation)
- How the author is using language or imagery (Links to an external site.) to help you understand the meaning of the story
- What the story’s themes, (Links to an external site.) or key ideas are (there may be more than one!)
Your assignment is to:
1) Watch the video “How and Why We Read” by author and educator John Green (linked below). In this 7-minute video, Green explains how reading and analyzing literature builds empathy and communication skills; he also introduces some important concepts like hyperbole and metaphor. If you’ve ever wondered why English classes are required at college, this video has some answers for you.
2) Read pages 1-74 (chapters 1-4) of In the Footsteps of Crazy Horse. I also encourage you to look at the map on the page before chapter 1 to see where the story takes place, and to check out the glossary in the back of the book which defines some of the words and concepts that you may be unfamiliar with.
3) Write a document of close reading notes for these four chapters of the book using this template: In the Footsteps of Crazy Horse file 1 When you are done you will do two things. First, you will upload that document. Next, you will choose the three most interesting observations that you made!
