Professor and Class:
I recently made a car purchase in February because mine was having some problems due to high mileage and it was just time for another car. I got a 2012 Ford Focus. It has low mileage and it is in good condition for it being 8 years old. I was aiming for a newer car and the dealership tried to help, but I had to stay what was in my budget. The car isn’t new but it’s new to me and I’m happy with it. It is more reliable since I have a long commute to work and back. It came with a warranty for up to 100,000 miles and my payments and insurance are affordable. I pay $379 a month for everything. This was a psychological value purchase. This was my first car purchase on my own and even though it isn’t brand new, I’m happy with it and the payments. One could say that I should have went for a newer and better vehicle since I owe $12,000 on it, and that I should have paid more and gotten the newer car so it would be more beneficial in the long run.
I’ve never driven a Ford so after researching, the Ford Focus itself appeals to younger people and mostly women and an average consumer. Ford trucks would be more appealing for men whether they are a single man or married with a family. Ford has shifted to have more fuel efficient and smaller vehicles. Their cars and trucks live up to their slogan, “Built Ford Tough.” I haven’t had any problems from this car and it still has some features I haven’t had in a car even though it’s 8 years old.

A purchase I recently made that was purely psychological but also has monetary value was a pair of luxury designer tapered postcard jeans. It was a psychological purchase because I did not need it but I wanted it. It looked good and when I tried it on I looked good in it and it felt good on me. These values both influenced my purchasing decision. The psychological probably more than the monetary. Psychologically, I have this thing about wearing quality clothes. My mom started me off as a kid with the attitude “you get what you pay for†and it has stuck. Most of my purchases are of higher quality than the average 23-year-old. But monetarily I very rarely buy new. I usually consignment shop at luxury shop that authenticate the brands they are selling. I live in Atlanta, GA and there are a few excellent consignment shops that offers new or like new items at very reasonable prices. I know that there are some people who would argue that a pair or pants is a pair of pants or a shirt is a shirt. But until you’ve worn a cashmere sweater versus a cotton/wool blend sweater you’ll never know the difference in quality.
