Profile/Descriptive GuidelinesProfiles are a type of nonfiction writing that appears in several genres of publications. For instance, travel publications often “profile” different locations, focusing on one or two not commonly known details about them to generate interest. Sensory details—like sight, sound, and smell—are a must in this type of publication; writers of travel narratives of any sort want their readers to travel. It is not a happenstance that most of the ads in travel magazines are for airlines, hotels, and restaurants. The more the ad purchasers are paid in tourist dollars, the more the publication prospers, and finally more writers are paid for more profiles. Food critics often write profiles as well, as do journalists who write special interest pieces about citizens for local newspapers. Keep this in mind when you are writing and pay special attention to your audience. Ask yourself if the profile is interesting enough to be in one of these types of publications. Your main objective should be to persuade your reader to go to the place or event or to believe that the person is noteworthy in some way.MUST HAVES:Sensory details (sight, sound, taste, touch, smell)Background on the topicAn uncommon angle (don’t argue something obvious)A thesisConsistent first or third personAt least 3 pagesMUST NOT HAVES:The profile should be of someone NOT in your immediate family if you pick a personIf you want to profile a place, think small—no cities or countriesDon’t profile something you don’t remember well.
