For this component of the course students are required to write a reflective two-part essay connecting

a previous problematic work or non-work experience/event to relevant theoretical course content

covered in weeks 1-8. Assignments should be in the range of (+/-10%) 500 words for Part 1 and in the

range of 1500 words for part two – excluding appendices and bibliography but including in-text

citations.

Part 1: Provide a concise summary of what happened in this particular situation.

Part 2 Apply relevant unit concepts and theory (with appropriate referencing) to explain why the

particular event/s occurred. For example students may wish to draw on process theories of motivation

such as expectancy theory or goal setting theory to explain why they were demotivated in a job or at

school. Alternatively they may draw on justice theory to explain a situation of perceived injustice and

lack of motivation.

This assignment must be submitted via Turnitin. Students will be assessed on their use of relevant unit

content including theory and theoretical concepts. A key component of this assignment is to

demonstrate clear and robust understanding of how the event or series of events they are discussing

connect to theory and concepts covered in the unit which students should explain in Part 2.

Assignments lacking demonstrated analysis and theoretical application will score poorly. Style of

expression will also be evaluated (including grammar and spelling). Students must use the Chicago 16

Referencing system. Assignments that use references inaccurately or fail to use referencing will be

penalized accordingly. The use of Wikipedia online encyclopaedia is discouraged.

Students will be provided with feedback on their performance in the assignment through Blackboard

under ‘My Grades’ in order to facilitate further development of learning.

A marking rubric for this activity is posted on Blackboard for students’ reference in planning their

presentation and related activities.
