Describe an example from the research literature of an effective health communication program using mass media.
The Mass Media Campaign which impacts influenza vaccine obtainment of University Students is a great example of an effective health communication program. The goal of the study was to examine if a campus-wide mass media promotion campaign of clinics located in the area would be devoted to providing affordable, low-cost influenza vaccinations affects the number of students who had taken the vaccine (Shropshire, 2013). Mass media campaigns are very important and help with the improvement of health behaviors and populations (Shropshire, 2013). To help increase the rates of vaccinations and provide information to the students, the campus health center along with many media campaigns utilized PowerPoint presentations, flyers, advertisements, and social media platforms to bring awareness to college students regarding influenza vaccinations.
What were the key outcomes of this program?
In the fall of 2011 a total of 889 students received the influenza vaccine on campus (Shropshire, 2013). There was a 30% increase from previous year students who had taken the influenza vaccination. The response rate from the recall, awareness, banners, engagement in different social mass media channels, and many communication elements were very effective (Shropshire, 2013). Some students had admitted to not getting the influenza vaccine because they were either afraid of needles, did not like shots, or did not think it was important to get vaccinated (Shropshire, 2013). Key outcomes of this campaign is that due to the information around campus, media platforms, and additional sources of information provided, the students expressed that the information encouraged and influenced their decisions to get vaccinated and would not have gotten vaccinated otherwise.
What factors and features made it successful?
Mass media influenced college students to obtain the influenza vaccine. The campaign was successful in getting an additional 30% influenza vaccination increase from the previous year (Shropshire, 2013). An estimation of 35% of students who had taken the vaccination stated that they were encouraged and influenced by the campaign which helped the decision making to obtain the vaccination (Shropshire, 2013). Many communication platforms of interactivity levels to non-interactive should be measured to increase the obtainment of the influenza vaccine (Shropshire, 2013). Mass media campaigns can broadcast information effectively and for free which are dynamic influences that are key elements in the decision of students to make decisions in regards to vaccination obtainment.
