In nursing cultural competency is all about respecting the right and dignity of
patients and others. Nursing is one of the professions were it is impossible to
avoid or overlook people’s culture and belief. People of different ethnicities
and cultures are faced with healthcare needs every day and is our duty as
nurses to understand that culture influences how people view disease, illness
and treatment in order to avoid stereotyping,
discrimination, racism, and prejudice.
In nursing practice, cultural knowledge helps in effective communication. Many people of
different cultures and languages seeks healthcare needs every day and is our
responsibility to respect whatever the patient speaks as part of his/her
culture, if unable to understand patient language. During hospital stay, nurses
have the right to find an interpreter that will help to promote communication
in other to provide optimum care to patient.
Understanding of individual culture helps to
avoid false assumptions, false beliefs or practice for example Middle Eastern
husband of female patient does not want a male doctor to examine his wife or
Asian patient often avoid eye contact.
Cultural competency makes nurses to be flexible in
their practice, because patient care plan needs to be individualized based on patient’s
culture and belief.
“Cultural competence in nursing practice is more
than just having practice is more than having the right information, though , its
about establishing professional relationships with every patient, regardless of
how wired or unusual their expectations may appear. Its about providing optimum
care at all times, even when patients pose special, unexpected challenges.”
