personal belief system, philosophy homework help
1.write a 100words reply to this discussion:I do believe that this would make Franz an irrational man. I believe that anyone who can not adapt or incorporate known truths into their own personal belief system is highly irrational, stubborn, or simply not intelligent. It is not easy to admit when you are wrong. Our egos can get in the way of being rational. I believe that religion is absolutely irrational yet millions of people disagree with me. Am I the irrational one? I am not sure which side I am defending right now but I do not think that matters. Pick a side and someone is being irrational. Politics can be irrational. This past election was irrational. Once again I say that if you stand up and take a side on any issue, these days, that there are twenty one reports to refute both sides. Sometimes I think we give up on rationality. Sometimes it is easier to just go along with the status quo. The less questions you ask, the less you will have to face difficult answers. In conclusion, it is most definitely irrational to believe in things that are not true. When you start attributing magic as the cause of your beliefs you leave yourself open to believing anything.

In the case of Franz, I do believe he is guilty of complete irrational behavior. If you know something is factually correct, and you still opt to believe something else, in my opinion, it is ignorant as well as irrational. For example, if you know that sugar attracts ants, but still decide to believe that a homemade pesticide made with sugar will keep ants out, you are irrational. I think that a lot of people who decide to believe something that they know is incorrect, are probably holding onto something for a deeper reason such as faith or superstition. In this case, I would not be so insensitive to call them ignorant, rather than deeply into their faith, or overwhelmed by their situation. I also believe that some people are just in denial. I do think that having something to believe in may be good for people becasue it gives them an escape and a comforting feeling. For example, a parent who lost a child, but doesnt immeiately come to terms with the truth. I dont think this situation is irrational because it helps counteract pain.

After viewing the Dan Ariely video, summarize one of the main points made by Dr. Ariely. Next, think of a time where you (or someone you know) may have been guilty of something similar to one of the errors Airely discusses, and provide the details of the situation. In retrospect, what might you have done to avoid the error in reasoning?
