So let’s explore the “Quotas”. This is similar to a discussion question in another class I am teaching BMGT 392 Global Business. Governments will limit the volume and type of imports in order to protect infant industries or local industries from foreign competition.

Do you think this stifles entrepreneurs and innovation when companies within a country’s borders do not have to deal with competition? Provide scholarly references to support your conclusion.

Answer preview……….. Protectionism is the measures taken by a country to limit competition from international industries. The government defines the volumes and types of imports with a motivation to protect growing local industries. States enforce regulations including restrictive quotas and tariffs which raise the price of importing goods hence the imports provide less competition in the domestic market compared to locally produced goods. Such regulations are politically motivated, and they usually work in the short run. Although protectionism may appear as a step towards promoting the growth of local industry, it has a downside. The country becomes less competitive in international commerce as compared to other states due to the lack of incentives to innovate….
