Please read two articles first: (Wesley Yang, “Paper Tigers,” Kenji Yoshino, “The New Civil Rights” ) For those two articles I will have the e version attach. Please read the articles before writing. Please wrrite in proper MLA format and write at least 5 full pages. And please make sure each body paragraph has quotes from every article. The essay question is :We all struggle with what it means to have an identity. The question of who we are often is relative to where we are and why we are with the people who comprise our social group. In the process of trying to belong, an individual may feel the need to “cover” certain truths about the self that in turn prevent that person from finding a sense of satisfaction with his or her identity. In Yang, he questions what it means to be an Asian-American and explores the ways that an identity creates social and cultural boundaries for someone. In Yoshino, he presents the concepts of the “True Self” and the “False Self,” and examines how the process of “covering” becomes a norm for individuals.

What must one uncover about the self to better understand what equality means?

Here are some suggestions.

• What do the terms “equality” and “liberty” mean in the context of Yoshino? What examples can you find in Yang that indicate there is a difference between both?
• What role does conversation play in the claim for a “new civil rights” that Yoshino discusses? Is there conversation in Yang? Could what Yang mentions about his friends and their perspectives relate what Yoshino suggests in his essay?
• How is the “Bamboo Ceiling” that Yang discusses related to Yoshino? Are there other types of ceilings—and why are the connected to what Yang examines in his essay?
• What is a “true self?” Why is does the “cover” process become a way to make that self “false?”
