Reflection Assignment
After reading Walt Whitman biography and the first 5 stanzas of Song of Myself in addition to one of the other modernist works from this week’s readings and viewing options, respond to the following prompts. Each prompt should be addressed in a well-developed paragraph of at least 150 words).
- Choose one of the literary terms for this week and discuss its significance in relation to “Song of Myself.”
- What connections (make at least two) exist between Whitman’s work and the other modernist portrayal that you read or viewed?
- Based on your reading and viewing, what is significant about this time and these works?
Your assignment must be in MLA format and you must quote or paraphrase and properly cite each work at least once. For example, if I were writing about “song of Myself,” my citation could look like this:
When Whitman writes,”The friendly and flowing savage, who is he?/Is he waiting for civilization, or past it and mastering it? ” it is clear that he is questioning any system that divided humans into categories based on the presence or lack of civilization. In this case, I would not include parenthetical documentation because Whitman is named in the text.
However, in the case of the following example it would be needed:
In the poem, the lines, “The friendly and flowing savage, who is he? /Is he waiting for civilization, /or past it and mastering it? ” question any system that divides humans into categories based on the presence or lack of civilization (Whitman 39:1-2)
For this assignment, you do not need to include a Works Cited page. Before submitting your paper, please review the Guidelines for Written Work on the Syllabus & Course Info page.
