research paper relating to issues concerning Early American Literature
Write a research paper of ~1800 words that follows the guidelines below:
This assignment is a research paper, so a significant component of this assignment is to find, use, and properly integrate outside sources (you need at *least* three outside sources; most students will use more than three sources). To ensure that your topic relates to issues addressed in AML 2010–and to keep the focus of your essay manageable–select one or two concerns to explore. To this end, essays should address “Early American Literature” and at least one of the following:
Legal issues or “the law”
Religion/spirituality
Patriotism
Gender issues
Science
Environmental issues
Genre
Work/labor
Education
Constructions of “otherness”
Politics in literature
Family ties
Migration
Cultural taboos
Stories/people we have studied in this course: Man vs. Man, women vs. women, Harper, Douglas, Melville, Poe, The Raven, Hawthorne, Equiano, Mather, Columbus & “Letter of Discovery”
Important reminders:
1. All essays must be written on works that appear in our anthology and that are listed on the course syllabus.
2. Use MLA format for all essays.
3. All essays should be original; cite any and all sources that are used or consulted (using MLA in-text citation and a “Works Cited” page). The FGCU Academic Honesty Policy is in effect.
