Admiration for the various types of leaders that I have encountered within scope of my professional career has always very been colorful and layered. Each helping professional displayed and possessed a different skillset that was unique but rallied the attention of respect of subordinates. Relational (Charismatic) leader is an essential component in generating a sense of buy-in from employees including other members of leadership. A relational leader establishes trust to executes tasks that requires great decision-making and planning skills. The emphasis on the various traits that leadership posses was informative. The eight traits: intelligence, alertness, insight, responsibility, initiative, persistence, self-confidence, and sociability are traits observed in various human services professional and often all at once (Northhouse P. Guy. 2019 P.19). The natural ability to engage and effectively lead certainly has embedded skills that most hope to master. A crucial component is passion which is the ultimate the driving force of any thriving helping practitioner versus simply being the tool to utilize when needed. The Skills and Traits leadership approach unified has multiple capabilities as well as pertinent benefits. They are both essential components in a truly competent helping professional. I have observed a former supervisor who embedded both skillsets and who was truly dynamic especially as an mentor. It is true that leaders can attains ?Skills? through professional experiences and academics. Some also have an innate ability to lead not in all but most professional settings (Northhouse P. Guy. 2019 P.43). The notable phase ? One must learn how to ?Follow? before he/she can ?lead,? definitely speaks to the learning curve of skill development. It is pertinent for professionals to acquire an array of skills (tools) to incorporate into their careers. Again, these ?tools? would serve as ?foundational tools,? not to overshadow their natural gifts.
