1 About Health and Socio-political Issues in Aged Care
1.1 An Introduction to this Unit
This unit examines health and socio political issues in aged care within a social capital framework. Social constructs
and contexts of ageing are explored and issues of social and economic disadvantage are examined. Equity and access
to health care services and the experiences of older people within these services are also highlighted. The role of
health professionals and managers in actively engaging in health and social policy debate for ethically just care and
services for older people is addressed.
1.2 What is Expected of You
Study Load
A student is expected to study an hour per credit point a week. For example a 10 credit point unit would require 10
hours of study per week. This time includes the time spent within classes during lectures, tutorials or practicals.
Attendance
Offshore Hong Kong Baptist University – students have 75% mandatory lectures.
Onshore – external via distance education only – no attendance requirement.
On Campus – Day – students have 80% mandatory tutorial attendance (in line with international student requirements).

Unit materials will be made available on the unit’s vUWS (E-Learning) site (https://vuws.westernsydney.edu.au/).
You are expected to consult vUWS at least twice a week, as all unit announcements will be made via vUWS. Teaching
and learning materials will be regularly updated and posted online by the teaching team.

2.2 Approach to Learning
Activity: Teaching activities that support achievement of learning outcomes
Modules: Working through the Compulsory Learning tasks and readings of these learning modules will assist you to
meet the learning outcomes and assignment requirements of this unit of study.
Unit vUWS site: The unit’s vUWS site will give you access to a wide range of resources and enable you to communicate with each other and with the unit co-ordinator through email and the discussion forums. You are advised to
check the email and discussion forums weekly.
Blended learning activity: Blended learning activities have been embedded throughout the unit content to enhance
the student learning experiences. Access to a computer and the internet is essential in order to be able to: access
course materials; to participate in discussion groups; and to access additional resources provided by the lecturer during
the session.

2.3 Assessment Summary
The assessment items in this unit are designed to enable you to demonstrate that you have achieved the unit learning
outcomes. Completion and submission of all assessment items which have been designated as mandatory or compulsory is essential to receive a passing grade.
To pass this unit you must:
– Achieve at least 50% when all assessment marks are totalled
– Complete and submit all assessment tasks at the required time and required academic standard
– International Students are to attend at least four of the five two-hour workshops provided to them at the Parramatta
campus throughout the Autumn semester.

In this essay you are required to critique primary health care for older people living in the community.
Points to consider:
