This project involves critiquing an article that uses statistics in a critical way to draw conclusions, make recommendations, or confirm hypotheses. Being able to intelligently understand the uses and abuses of statistics is one of the most important skills learned from introductory statistics course. This project will help you in becoming “statistically literate”.

  1. Research. Find a scholarly journal article which interests you that uses statistics in an important and meaningful way. The article or paper should use statistical procedures taught in our class like point estimation, confidence intervals, hypothesis tests, correlation, or regression.
  2. Summary. Using easy-to-understand English, summarize the article, highlighting its findings and conclusions. (1-2 pages)
  3. Statistical Procedures. Explain the data and statistical procedures that were used in the article. Critique the use of these statistical procedures, including how the sample was taken, any outliers or missing values, and choice of procedures. Do you believe the statistical procedures used were appropriate? Do you believe the results of the statistical data analysis support the conclusions of the article? Explain your answers. (1-2 pages)
  4. Appendix. Include a copy (or reference) of the statistical section of the article.
