The Apocalypse

Imagine that an Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP)–either from some galactic event or some malevolent enemy’s nuclear weapons–renders electronic devices useless and throws the world into chaos. You awaken from a long sleep to find that that society has broken down, and there is no government, police, law or order. For some reason a small child is holding your hand, but you cannot remember who the child is. You wander for days and at last find what appears to be an old, underground fall-out shelter. As you enter, you find a bunch of books but no computers/cell phones/electrical devices. What books would you hope to find as you contemplate the future and rebuilding your life?
Write a couple paragraphs and use your imagination.
*Something like this scenario lies behind the Greek idea of “founding” a society and the modern idea of the “State of Nature” (i.e. what life was like or would be like without government). Some of the books we will talk about this semester would be among those I would hope to find.
