The purpose of this assignment is to enable you to take an introspective look at your own interpersonal communication effectiveness by examining how you deal with interpersonal conflict and to develop a plan of action by using the conflict management techniques discussed in the text for addressing it.
1. Choose an interpersonal conflict to address in this paper. It doesn’t have to be a major conflict, but the weightier ones often have more significance and reason for analyzing. It would be best to use a current conflict for the recency of the information, but if you cannot think of any you may use a past conflict. Answer these questions about the conflict:
What is the problem?
Where does it primarily occur?
Why does it occur?
When does it occur?
With whom does it occur?
How does it occur? Etc.
2. Thoughtfully consider the following questions and then answer them. Use other-perspective; try to see the conflict more objectively (oftentimes conflicts exist because we are entrenched in our own views and refuse to look at it from another perspective). Ask:
What might I be doing to help intensify or prolong this disagreement?
Are my goals realistic?
Am I trying to win this one?
3. Develop a plan to talk with the individual with whom you have the conflict. Develop this in terms of concepts from pages 240-251. How should you approach resolution of the conflict? Be specific and detailed.
