the tortilla curtain 3

Please write a minimum of one page, but no more than two pages addressing the following question:

•At the end of the novel, when Delaney’s life is truly threatened, Candido literally extends a hand to help save his life.

•Throughout the novel, the tension between these two men clearly rises to the climax when Delaney breaks into the shack and we, as readers, anticipate a physical altercation. However, the landslide (natural world) disrupts that conflict and creates a crisis. In this crisis, Candido forgoes his own anger, bigotry, and hatred toward Delaney to help him, even in the midst of the tragic loss of his child.

•Why do you think Candido did this? What do you think enables people to see through their own biases in times of crisis to help each other or unify for a common cause? Think of examples from your own life, the news, history, etc. to support your claim in the second question.
