This assignment addresses the use of repeated measures ANOVA. For this assignment, use the
cancer.sav SPSS dataset to address the below questions. The dataset provides data on patients’
oral cancer over time, and includes 9 variables: ID trt, age, weightin, stage, totalcin (Time 1),
totalcw2 (Time 2), totalcw4 (Time 3), and totalcw6 (Time 4). Variable definitions are provided
in Variable View of the SPSS dataset. The data is based on patients assigned to treatment (aloe
juice) and control groups. For this assignment, analyze the treatment and control group data
separately.
1) For each group member, specify a research question that could be addressed using a withingroups ANOVA. Identify the independent and dependent variables, their level of measurement,
and target population.
2) Specify a research hypothesis regarding patients’ oral cancer condition over the four time
points (totalcin to totalcw4) separately for treatment and control group patients. What are the null
and alternative hypotheses? Identify the independent and dependent variables. How many levels
are there to the independent variable?
2) Report each group’s means and standard deviations on each of the levels of the independent
variable. What conclusions can be made regarding the means over time?
3) For the entire sample, conduct a within-groups ANOVA. Report and interpret the measure
associated with the test of the sphericity assumption. Report and interpret whether we fail to
reject or reject the null hypothesis. For a statistically significant F-statistic, report omega-squared
squared.
4) If a paired comparisons analysis can be done, what conclusions can be made?
5) For each group member, provide a brief discussion of the relevance of this analysis to your
own research and its use in your work. What new information did you gain from this analysis?
