We have spent a considerable amount of time thinking through the central claims of Confucius and his students as found in Kongzi (Confucius)) “the Analects” from the book “Readings in Classical Chinese PHILOSOPHY”,second edition by Philip J.Ivanhoe and Bryan W. Van Norden. These sayings and suggestions were not meant to be speculative or theoretical comments about morality, politics, and the good life. Instead, Confucius and his students were reflecting on how to actually change one’s practices so as to live according to a particular dao. For this assignment, incorporate the teachings of the Analects into your own life. You may choose any aspect (or several aspects) from the Analects that you like. But in doing so, give some thought about how you might incorporate it (or them) into your life. Choose the passages first. Reflect about their meaning, and think of how they might relate to your own life. Every day that you experiment, try to write down the date along with a paragraph or so describing what concrete changes you made, and how they are linked to a passage (or passages) that you chose to focus on. By the end of this period of practice, you should have several days worth of experiences that you have documented. Write about your experiences, providing a commentary as to whether the experience helped you understand the text better, whether it was a successful or disappointing experience, and how you might do things differently in the future (based on your experience). Some important points: Please be clear about what aspect you are choosing to practice or incorporate into your life, and be sure to cite the relevant passages from the textbook (e.g. 2.2, 12.1, etc.) that contain the ideas you are using. Choose the passages well. Be sure to note the specific, concrete things you did to modify your life according to the aspects of the Analects that you chose, and say why the behaviors you chose are reasonable, modern-day examples or analogues of these ideas. Provide a critical reflection / evaluation at the end.
