One of the clearest indicators of the ritualistic level of the dances lay in the participation in the dance. Notably, only men were involved in the performances that at times lasted several days primarily because the women were considered too inferior to participate in the activity. Additionally, there were breaks between the dances in which elders or other spiritual leaders who told stories about the Hoopa Indian culture, in the process making the experience more than a meeting among the members of the Indian community in the North American region……….
