As an engineer for the Federal Aviation Administration I have encountered plenty of opportunities for career development and advancement. Therefore, when I became the lead engineer/ acting manager for the development of the new control tower, I had to ask myself several questions. What are the mission objectives, what is my timeline, and who were the parties involved. because the team was spread out in different states keeping project barriers at a low was key. Two important barriers are communication and team drive, These barrier can come in the form of lack of attention and interest, distractions, or irrelevance to the receiver. Knowing how to boost moral and keep your team focused will help you overcome some of the barriers mentioned above. However, there are some barriers that take a lot more then moral to fix, like a difference in perception and viewpoint. . If a project manager and team members are unable to see eye to eye on future projects, then it may cause a split in viewpoints leaving the project in mayhem while missing deadlines. I believe in order to keep a organization going manager have to adapt so setting company telecoms and sending status emails to keep information flowing throughout the team.

This is quite the relevant topic given state of affairs in the world with the introduction of COVID-19. Now maybe more than any other time in modern society companies and organizations are relying on virtual workdays. My company was a very early adopter of social distancing and we’ve been 100% remote since. The transition was easy for my particular teams as some were already remote or partially remote. However, myself and others in leadership worked in our facility daily. The challenge when managing remote employees tends to be maintaining a consistent level of performance as they are facing a mired of distractions when working from home. This issue is only exasperated now with children having to be at home due to school being cancelled and additional family members now working for home due to COVID-19. A certain allowance or consideration need to be paid to all remote employees who are now working from home currently. We have still been able execute on our objectives in large part due to the quality of personnel the teams are made up of. We’ve hired an exceptional group of individuals and that has proven to be immensely valuable in this era of remote work.
Project management needs to adapt in several ways when managing remote employees. There needs to be a more constant presence from leadership to let the team know that not only does accountability still stand but that stellar performances will also be recognized. Also utilizing video conferencing is an excellent way for the team to maintain a collective group feeling of comradery amongst the team.
