Choose one of the following essay topics and write a clear and concise three to five page
critical analysis essay in which you follow the writing guidelines set forth in the course
description. Be sure that your essay has a strong thesis and adequate support to back up this

  1. Concerning The House on Mango Street, write an essay in which you discuss Esperanza’s
    writing. How does her writing both connect and disconnect her from her neighborhood?
  2. The supernatural plays a major role in many of the novels we have read thus far. Write
    an essay in which you compare and contrast the contribution of the supernatural to the
    overall effect of Bless me, Ultima, The House on Mango Street, and Beloved.
  3. Compare and contrast Maya Angelou and Toni Morrison’s depiction of the South as seen
    in I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings and Beloved.
