Purpose:

To analyze Discourse and discourse communities and understand yourself in relationship to them

Read James Gee, “Literacy, Discourse, and Linguistics: Introduction” p. 5 to the very top of 14; John Swales, “The Concept of Discourse Community” (especially Framing the Reading, 2.3, & 2.5) (Files>Readings)

  • Write a short paragraph describing and analyzing the saying/writing/doing/being/valuing/assuming/believing of your own primary Discourse (perhaps your family).
  • Then write a short paragraph describing and analyzing the saying/writing/doing/being/valuing/assuming/believing of a secondary discourse community that you are an apprentice or expert member of (such as a sports team, a club, a religious institution, etc.). How did you become a member of this group? To what extent is this a dominant secondary discourse in society?
  • Write one more short paragraph describing what you learned from these articles that was most interesting, noteworthy, important, or thought provoking. Perhaps include a question prompted by these articles that you’d want to discuss.
