Yama and Niyama

Yama:

  • Ahimsa – not hurt with words, thoughts, or actions. However, self-defense ok.
  • Satya – Using words in the name of good.
  • Asteya – Non steaing
    • No taking what does not belong to you
    • Not depriving someone of what is due to them
    • Not taking even mentally
  • Brahmacarya: Seeing everything as an expression of something greater.
  • Aparigraha: living simply

Niyama:

Shaoca: purity of mind and body; cleanliness

Santosa: contentment/gratitude

Tapah: Selfless service

Svadhaya: Spend time reading uplifting/inspiring literature

Ishvara Pranidhana: Do meditation.

HW: Chose one of the Yamas and Niyamas and do your best to practice it very closely for the next week. Write at least 300 words describing your experience.
