You are a consultant that has been hired by Jack to evaluate the company’s risks. Write a report (1-2 pages) that highlights some of the key risk exposures faced by Jack’s Home Appliance Center. Which do you think are the most pressing concerns (at least the top two exposures)? Be sure to fully explain to Jack the precise nature of the loss exposure (asset, peril, consequences) and estimate the impact (frequency vs. severity) to his business (i.e., would the risk have only minimal impact or high impact). In addition, identify areas of concern about other risks that may require more information to assess, but is not provided in the case. Jack’s Home Appliance Center is a sole proprietor-owned store in a far western suburb of Chicago. Jack’s sells large appliances including refrigerators, dishwashers, and home entertainment systems. The store is in a strip shopping center in an increasingly trendy part of town. When the center opened in the 1950’s, it was remote and generally an unsuccessful venture. The center is 125 feet from a tributary of Salt Creek which is the border line for the neighboring state. Recently the city built a brick and cement pedestrian walkway next to the creek. Scrub brush and other unattractive vegetation were cleared away thereby improving the visual ambience. As the suburb has grown, Jack’s is now in a very attractive location and quite profitable. Jack’s product line is expensive and “boutiqueâ€. Jack’s merchandise is manufactured in American, Japanese, and Mexican locations. Goods are exclusively shipped by common carriers with whom Jack’s agrees to standard shipping terms. Jack’s caters to a successful, high income clientele. Naturally the store delivers and installs the product. Jack’s has a delivery van and two drivers. The driver and a delivery person load and unload the merchandise at the homes of their customers. Occasionally Jack’s service manager and service technician will make small deliveries in their personal car and on other occasions they will travel to customer homes to deal with complaints and installation problems. Jack’s service technician deals with small problems and Jack’s has a contract with an appliance repair firm who will send repair persons out to their customers’ homes to make more difficult appliance repairs. Customers call Jack directly for this service. Jack advertises and emphasizes the seamless purchase. Customers are offered valet parking, bottled water, soft drinks, and juice as well as snacks and pastries. During the holiday season Jack’s offers wine and cheese some afternoons. Of course Jack’s offers service by company employees. Normally during business hours five employees are at work, including sales people, a driver and a service technician. Jack has a total of twenty employees, including one store manager, two service managers, two drivers, and two service technicians who do installations and simple appliance repairs. Many customers use credit cards, cash is rarely used by Jack’s customers and he doesn’t have his own credit program.
