You will select a jazz recording (i.e., an individual tune with improvisation) and thoroughly review it in a 2-page (double-spaced) paper, including the following:
- Name of the selection, date of recording, name of the album it is selected from
- Name of the composer
- Name all of the performers along with their instruments
- Name the prevailing style of the performance
- Give a detailed description of the performance, answering all of the following questions:
- What was the form (AABA, 12-bar blues, etc.) of the piece? Was there an introduction or extended ending used and, if so, which instruments played it?
- What was the rhythmic style (swing, Latin, etc.) of the piece?
- What was the order of improvised solos? (Include the name of each soloist, the instruments they played, and anything you feel was significant about their solos.)
- Were there any other techniques used in the performance (i.e., stop-time, solo breaks, background figures, double- or half-time, etc.)? By whom, how, and where were these techniques used?
- Anything else you feel is significant about the recording or the performance.
