Assignment: Practicum Journal Entry: Analyzing an Ethical Decision

In your role as a PMHNP, you will encounter several situations that will require your ability to make sound judgments and practice decisions for the safety and well-being of individuals, families, and communities. There may not be a clear-cut answer of how to address the issue, but your ethical decision making must be based on evidenced-based practice and what is good, right, and beneficial for patients. You will encounter patients who do not hold your values, but you must remain professional and unbiased in the care you provide to all patients regardless of their socio-demographic and ethnic/racial background. You must be prepared to critically analyze ethical situations and develop an appropriate plan of action. For this Assignment, you review the literature and discover the various ethical dilemmas PMHNPs encounter and how these issues are typically addressed in your state.

To prepare: Review literature for moral/ethical issues encountered by a PMHNP. Select one of the articles you found that was published within the last 5 years to use as a focus for this assignment.

Write a 2-page paper in which you do the following: Summarize the moral/ethical issue in the article (no more than 1 paragraph). Describe the moral and ethical dilemmas surrounding the issue. Analyze the ethical issue and compare them to the state health laws and regulations in your state. Outline the process of ethical decision making you would use to address this ethical dilemma.

Read the story “Cathedral” by Raymond Carver (pages 103-113); Part 1, Chapter 3).  Stories explore some aspect of human experience.  Good stories cause the reader to think more deeply about how people interact with each other or with the world they live in.

Discuss how the story “Cathedral” explores human experience, giving details from the story.  What do we, as readers, learn about human interactions from this story?  What is the significance of drawing the cathedral? 

Your answer should demonstrate thoughtful analysis, using elements of the story to support your point.  You should make a short comment (about a paragraph long, at least 100 words) and you should respond to a comment by another student.  Superficial comments will receive a lower grade; comments that show engagement with the story on a deeper level will receive a higher grade.

For the topic, put your name first, then what you want to focus on in your discussion.  For example, Brown: Stereotypes.  

Identify a health information technology system, explain how it improves healthcare outcomes. Identify the organization you work for uses this system.

Purpose

To apply lessons in nursing history to living nurses contributing to nursing history through an interview and documentation of historical information

Requirements and Guidelines Nursing history is being made today by exemplary nurses throughout the world. Select one registered nurse who is creating nursing history to be the subject of this project. This RN must have at least 10 years of RN licensure. The nurse could be a family member; friend; colleague; acquaintance; manager; former instructor; or other nurse who is creating, delivering, or influencing the practice of nursing in your area. Do not select a former or current patient. Remember that a nurse does not have to create a nursing theory, write textbooks, or be the head of a nursing organization to make nursing history. The chief nurse executive who manages to deliver quality care in a small rural hospital with a tiny budget has a story worth telling. The nurse who served in the military has a story that is important to document as nursing history. The staff nurse who consistently provides high quality care is making history. History is not merely the major accomplishments or events; it includes the activities nurses everywhere do in their nursing lives. Milestone 1 is due at the end of Week 2. Clearly explain to the selected nurse that statements made in the interview will be recorded (audio, video, and/or written) and submitted to the instructor. The interview is not intended for public access. Obtain permission from the selected nurse to participate in an interview about his or her memories of nursing and nursing education; contributions to nursing; and persons or events that have influenced his or her nursing practice.

Good public health program planners are able to clearly describe, descriptively and/or analytically, the priority population and use that information to guide them when developing an intervention (activity) to address the specific problem.

In your final deliverable consisting of both an 8–10-page report and a 15–20-slide PowerPoint presentation, you will use the information from the pre-intervention elementary school asthma study to create an education plan for asthma prevention among school children in four schools, based on the social ecological model. See the model illustration below.

The findings and recommendations in your paper and PowerPoint presentation must be supported by your primary data results and peer-reviewed literature. Give reasons and examples in support of your positions. Cite all sources using APA format.

Your plan should be delivered in an 8–10-page report and include: Clear explanations of each level of the ecological model and how it addresses the problem. Positions supported by the asthma data and statistics from this course, which support the need for the education program. Calculations indicating if there is a significant difference in asthma prevalence between four schools (A, B, C, and D) using Statistical Inference and t-Tests. Refer to the help files in the Minitab application specifically for Statistical Inference and t-Tests. A well-supported answer to the question: Is there one school that has a greater need than others for priority in asthma education and why?

PowerPoint Presentation

Your 15–20-slide PowerPoint presentation should summarize your informatics research completed in Weeks 1–4, and your final needs assessment findings and recommendations. The PowerPoint presentation must include: Relevant information from your asthma study, and be visually stimulating with graphics and pictures as appropriate References both within the PowerPoint slides and a full citation on the last slide Speaker notes on each slide plus an audio file of your narration of the presentation using the “record narration” feature
