elect one of the following electrolyte disorders: hyperkalemia and hypokalemia; hypercalcemia and hypocalcemia; hypernatremia and hyponatremia; hypermagnesemia and hypomagnesemia. Reflect on signs and symptoms of this disorder.

When an electrolyte disorder occurs, it disrupts the balance of ionized salts in the blood. Since electrolytes regulate physiological functions in the body, if left untreated, electrolyte disorders can cause harm to multiple body systems. This results in a variety of symptoms which are sometimes severe and life threatening. In this Discussion, you explore common electrolyte disorders and their potential causes, as well as the impact of the disorders on patients.

To prepare:

  • Review Chapters 207, 208, and 241 of the Buttaro et al. text, as well as the Adams et al. and Assadi articles in this week’s Learning Resources.
  • Select one of the following electrolyte disorders: hyperkalemia and hypokalemia; hypercalcemia and hypocalcemia; hypernatremia and hyponatremia; hypermagnesemia and hypomagnesemia. Reflect on signs and symptoms of this disorder.
  • Consider potential causes of the disorder that you selected. Reflect on whether that disorder is iatrogenic or a result of prescribed drugs.
  • Think about the impact of this electrolyte disorder on patients. Consider how the disorder affects other body systems.

By Day 3

Post a description of the electrolyte disorder that you selected as well as signs and symptoms. Then, explain potential causes of the disorder including whether it is iatrogenic or a result of prescribed drugs. Finally, describe the impact of the disorder on patients and their body systems

Tammy is a 33-year-old who presents for evaluation of a cough. She reports that about 3 weeks ago she developed a “really bad cold” with rhinorrhea. The cold seemed to go away but then she developed a profound, deep, mucus-producing cough. Now, there is no rhinorrhea or rhinitis—the primary problem is the cough. She develops these coughing fits that are prolonged, very deep, and productive of a lot of green sputum. She hasn’t had any fever but does have a scratchy throat. Tammy has tried over-the-counter cough medicines but has not had much relief. The cough keeps her awake at night and sometimes gets so bad that she gags and dry heaves. A a differential of at least three (3) possible diagnosis’s and explain how each may be a possible answer to the clinical presentation above. Remember, to list the differential in the order of most likely to less likely. Based upon what you have at the top of the differential how would you treat this patient? Suppose now, the patient has a fever of 100.4 and complains of foul smelling mucous and breath. Indeed, she complains of producing cups of mucous some days. She has some trouble breathing on moderate exertion but this is only a minor complaint to her. How does this change your differential and why?

What responsibilities and liabilities does the hospital have? Dr. Simon? Any other healthcare professionals involved?

Please review the Discussion Board grading rubric in the course Syllabus.

Mr. Roland Jones, a patient of Dr. Reed Simon, has a history of mental illness. Mr. Jones is taking Depakote®, a medication for bipolar patients, but was hospitalized because he has been having increased symptoms of hallucinations and convulsions. Mr. Jones has no known family in the local area, and insists on going home because he is “afraid of these nurses.” Dr. Simon refused to release the patient, so Mr. Jones sneaked out of the hospital. He was found approximately 3 hours later near the side of the road (approximately 2 miles from the hospital) and was non-responsive.

Please discuss the following:

What responsibilities and liabilities does the hospital have? Dr. Simon? Any other healthcare professionals involved? What options did the facility have in terms of ensuring Mr. Jones wasn’t able to physically leave the facility?Should a medical facility have the ability, under the law, to keep a person against their will?If so, what criteria should be used? Who decides whether patients fit these criteria? Now, that Mr. Jones has been found, please discuss how you as the administrator of this facility will respond to this incident and what measures will be put in place to avoid such an undesirable outcome.

1. Relate the patient history and circumstances of the injury and the signs and symptoms related to the pathophysiology of this condition.

Pathophysiology assignment

Case study

Mr. S a 65 year old man was in an automobile accident in which he suffered a concussion.  Soon after he was released, ge noticed what he described as a gray spot in his field of vision.  At first he ignored it thinking it would go away but the spot seemed to darken and spread over his visual field. He didn’t report anypain with the problem. On calling his physician,  he was advised to gonyo the nearest hospital immediately.  A detached retina was diagnosed. After treatment he regained most of his normal sight back. Five years later  he began having problems again.  The central area of his visual field was becoming blurred,  and he was losing his depth perception.  An initial eye examination revealed neovascularization in both eyes.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

1. Relate the patient history and circumstances of the injury and the signs and symptoms related to the pathophysiology of this condition.

2. Discuss the treatments available

3. Relate the symptoms and signs to those of macular degeneration

The issue of medically assisted death (aka physician-assisted suicide) has been in the news in Canada, especially with debates and decisions in the Canadian House of Commons and Senate in June of 2016. For this assignment you will read up on the issue and relevant court, senate and parliamentary decisions, and write a position paper giving your own opinion on where you stand on the assisted-end-of-life question.Procedure:

  • Research: Educate yourself on the background and issues surrounding the debate in Canada, and current legal status of physician-assisted death in Canada and Nova Scotia. A good place to start is Dalhousie’s Health Law Institute’s website for End-of-Life Law & Policy in Canada: http://eol.law.dal.ca/?page_id=236 . You should also look up news stories by professional journalists on quality Canadian news websites such as the Globe and Mail, CBC News, Maclean’s, National Post, etc. (Note that for some websites, if you are not a subscriber you might only have a limited number of views on the site before it is blocked.) Your sources don’t have to be “academic” ones, but avoid sites like MSN, CNN, Huffington Post, etc.
  • Write a short summary of what the legal situation is today in Canada concerning end-of-life assistance, including the current status of Bill C-14 in Parliament.
  • Write an explanation of the positions/views both for and against doctor-assisted death. What are some of the ethical issues for society of Bill C-14?
  • Think through your own thoughts and opinions on where you stand on the issue and why. Write this up.
  • Include a bibliography of sources used, and use in-text citations or footnotes throughout. You may use either MLA or APA format.

Marks will be given based on evidence that you can clearly:

  • Explain what the issue is, its background and current legal status in Canada, based on your own research of quality sources as noted above 4 marks
  • Explain both the ‘for’ and ‘against’ positions and the ethical and societal implications of the issue 4 marks
  • Articulate your own views on the topic (even if you aren’t completely on one side or the other), explaining the reasons for your opinions 4 marks
  • Write a well-structured paper without spelling or grammatical errors, and with properly formatted in-text citations and bibliography 3 marks

Discuss strategies you could use to share this process with others in your area of nursing practice using Tanner’s model as a guide.

Question One

Reflection is a process used in nursing practice and involves noticing, interpreting, and responding (Tanner, 2006, p. 208). Discuss strategies you could use to share this process with others in your area of nursing practice using Tanner’s model as a guide. For example, discuss a situation where you noticed, interpreted, and responded, and then reflect upon the situation based on its context and your background in nursing, and how both contributed to the clinical judgment that you made.

Support your discussion and opinions with facts, relevant examples from personal nursing practice, and at least two citations from the reading or peer-reviewed professional nursing literature.

See the Nursing Syllabus Standards & Policies Document for Discussion Participation Guidelines & Grading Criteria.

Remember to use APA 6th edition formatting for all discussion posts and reference citations.
