essential skills for social work practice 2

Assignment: Family Assessment

Consider your experience both within your own family of origin and when interacting with other families. What is different between these examples of families?

In the field of social work, it is imperative that you know how to assess families. When trying to identify what is happening within a family, a social worker must learn about the family’s structure, identify their strengths, review their communication style, and understand the family’s dynamics. Families are influenced by the unique individuals within the family, as well as by the larger cultural context in which the family exists. Families vary in how they define who is a member of the family unit, what role each family should play, and what the family dynamics are based on an individual member’s contributions to the family system. Often, the social worker’s role is to help identify trouble spots and help the family re-adjust to healthy system dynamics.

In this week’s Assignment, you provide an assessment of a family and provide an analysis of the family using a social work perspective with consideration to strengths, cultural values, and social work theory.

Submit a 2- to 3-page paper in which you analyze a family that is familiar to you. Support your analysis by using the Kirst-Ashman and Hull text and at least 2 to 3 additional peer-reviewed articles to do the following:

  • Describe the structure of a family that is familiar to you.
  • Identify the strengths in the family.
  • Explain where in the life cycle this family is located and how that may influence family dynamics.
  • Analyze one form of communication used by this family and how this communication style influences family dynamics.
  • Describe the specific roles of two family members and explain if the various roles work well together for the benefit of this family.
  • Explain how understanding cultural values will help a social worker working with this family.
  • Analyze this family using systems theory or the ecological perspective.

hlth 100 this is public health assignment

For this assignment, you’ll do some “field investigation” to learn more about public health in action! Choose a public health issue that you feel particularly passionate or curious about, and then research a local, national, or global organization that is addressing this issue. Do as much behind the scenes research as you can, and if possible, try and arrange a site visit or phone interview with someone who works at the organization to learn even more. Write a 4 page (approx) paper, Powerpoint, OR video presentation providing an informative overview of the organization exposing its origins, mission, the types of public health projects it is working on, its primary beneficiaries, funding source(s), the geographic scope of its work, and a bit about how it is staffed (you may even investigate if they host college interns!).

In addition, you will want to examine the most pressing current issues (both threatening and positive forces) affecting the organization and its mission.

    • Provide evidence from multiple scholarly sources as evidence that your proposed solution is viable.
  • Interpret statistical data from at least three peer-reviewed scholarly sources within your argument.
    • Discuss the validity, reliability, and any biases.

EN 1101 Argumentation Paper Packet

Your assignment, if you choose to accept it (and you’d better, it’s worth 20% of your grade!) is to write a fully fleshed out Argumentation paper (6G) on a debatable topic that interests you. Avoid logical fallacies, include plenty of logical analysis and concrete evidence (from credible sources) in your appeal, and carefully consider a primary counterargument to your stance and (respectfully) refute it. Here are some sample controversial statements you might consider arguing for or against:

  • Reality television lacks any artistic value.

This paper should include properly cited quotes or paraphrases from at least three credible sources to support your thesis.

Your essay should contain a thesis statement that gives me an idea of how you will back this point up and how your support will be organized throughout. It should also fulfill the other requirements of your rubric.

1200 words (four pages double spaced 12 point font). Please include your name, a title, the date, and your class hour at the top, as well as page numbers throughout.

Assignment 6A: Pre-Writing

Your first assignment in the creation of your Argumentation Paper (6G) is to do a Pre-Writing exercise (6A). For this exercise you can choose one type of Pre-Writing, such as:

Asking questions

Listing

Brainstorming

Freewriting

Clustering

Bubbling

Informal Outlining

At the top of the first page of your assignment, list the type of Pre-Writing you chose to use from this list.

Choose an appropriate topic for the Argumentation paper (sample topics listed on the first page of this prompt) and write out one of the above Pre-Writing activities on that topic.

Your Pre-Writing activity should be at least one full page in length.

At the bottom of the last page of your assignment, write down a one sentence description of your narrowed topic for this paper.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask!

Assignment 6B: Thesis Statement

Your second assignment in the creation of your Argumentation Paper (6G) is to create your thesis statement (6B). For this exercise you should use this sheet as your guide and create a printed one page assignment that identifies your TOPIC, your STANCE on that topic, and three SUPPORT POINTS that you will use to back up that stance in your paper. Please include your name, date, etc., as you would on any other assignment and bring one hard copy to library day (see Course Schedule announcement for dates).

Assignment 6C: Annotated Bibliography

Your third assignment in the creation of your Argumentation Paper (6G) is to create an annotated bibliography (6C). An annotated bibliography formalizes your research process. It forces us to spend a bit more time thinking about the sources we’re using, whether we can trust them, and how we are using them in our writing. For this assignment, you should take your thesis statement and outline (Assignment 6B) and research one academic quality source that you can use to support the arguments in your compare/contrast paper.

You will need to use library resources to find one reliable source. Your annotated bibliography should include four distinct parts:

  • A full citation of that source in MLA Style as it would appear on your Works Cited page.
  • A short one paragraph summary of the important information contained in that source.
  • A thoughtful one paragraph explanation of why you found this source to be credible.
  • A short one paragraph explanation of how you could use this source to support your thesis.

Other than the citation, each part of your annotated bib should consist of complete sentences. Make sure to visually distinguish each part of the assignment.

Your research will start as an in-class activity, but you do not have to complete all parts of the assignment in class. Your source must be run by me during class, in the library, in order to verify that it is of academic quality. Be prepared to summarize your source and explain its credibility when you share it with me.

Sources can be electronic or print, but should be of academic quality (no .com, no wiki, no dictionaries or encyclopedias).

Type the results of this assignment to submit with your other assignments when your final draft is due (Assignment 6G).

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask!

Assignment 6D: Outline

Your fourth assignment in the creation of your Argumentation Paper (6G) is to take your thesis statement (6B) and expand it into an outline (6D). For this exercise you should use this handout as your guide and create a printed two-to-three page assignment that outlines a five paragraph structure for your essay based on an introduction, three support paragraphs, and a conclusion. Per our discussion in class, the three support points from your thesis should be the basis for your three support paragraphs.

Since you’ll be including source material for this paper, you can record key quotes or paraphrases (and their in-text citations) as examples where appropriate. Make sure to include your explanation or analysis of the source material you choose to use.

Please include your name, date, etc., as you would on any other assignment and bring one hard copy to your Conference (see Course Schedule announcement for dates).

See the next two pages for a helpful breakdown of how to assemble a complete outline. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask!

Assignment 6E: First Draft

Your fifth assignment in the creation of your Argumentation Paper (6G) is to take your outline (6D) and expand it into a full draft of your paper (6E). For this exercise you should use this handout as your guide and create a printed two-to-three page assignment that follows the five paragraph structure of your outline, but is fleshed out into complete sentences, and includes a clear introduction, support paragraphs, concrete examples, and a complete conclusion. Per our discussion in class, the three support points from your thesis should be the basis for your three support paragraphs. Please include your name, date, etc., as you would on any other assignment and bring three hard copies to workshop (see Course Schedule announcement for dates).

Remember, this paper should include at least three credible sources (each with MLA cited quotes or paraphrases) to support your thesis, as well as sufficient analysis and concrete examples.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask!

Assignment 6F: Revision Exercise Assignment 6G: Final Draft

Your sixth and seventh assignments in the creation of your Argumentation Paper (6G) are to take your first draft (6E), to do a revision exercise on it (6F), and then to fully revise and edit your first draft to create a final draft (6G) for submission in class.

6F: Revision and Editing Exercise

For this exercise you should review (look again) at your first draft and type full sentence answers to the following prompts:

  • What part of your paper, if any, can use expansion and what specific information can you add there to make it stronger?
  • What part of your paper, if any, gets off topic, and what can you remove to help?
  • Is your organization strong? If so, what makes it strong? If not, or if it could use improvement still, what can you move or substitute to help? Consider creating a reverse outline to help.
  • How credible are the sources you used? How do you know?
  • Examine your paper’s tone. Is it too informal or conversational? If so, what can change?
  • Do you have any word choice errors that spellcheck wouldn’t find?
  • Do you have any coma-splice errors, run ons, or sentence fragments?
  • Do you have any fluffy word choices?
  • Are all of your sources properly documented in MLA style?
  • What is one specific step you can take to improve your paper before submitting it?

Only one copy of Assignment 6F is needed. It should be submitted along with 6A, 6B, 6C, 6D, and 6E when you turn in 6G.

6G: Final Draft

Complete your final draft of your Argumentation Paper by revising and editing your first draft (6E). Your final draft should present a compelling argument clearly stated in a complete thesis statement, include a complete introduction, three support paragraphs, and a complete conclusion, should be well-organized and supported, should include plenty of thoughtful analysis and concrete support details and should follow all of the expectations of the course rubric.

The final draft should be a two page assignment (Times New Roman 12 point font) and should include your name, date, etc., as you would on any other assignment.

Assignments 6A, 6B, 6C, 6D, 6E, and 6F should be submitted by the listed due date (see Course Schedule announcement). Make sure everything is clearly labelled and organized to put yourself in the best position for success! If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask!

Submission Instructions: Check your Course Schedule announcement for deadlines and due dates. All assignments are due on Canvas by the start of class time on the due date. Make sure to use only .doc, .docx, .pdf, or .rtf file extensions. Make sure to submit assignments 6A-6F and 6G into separate dropboxes. If you experience any technological issues, please submit your assignments in emails to me as attachments before the deadline for submission.

politics and religion

Due Week 9 and worth 200 points

Religion and Politics have traditionally been highly debated topics in our society. Recently, the Pledge of Allegiance has added to this debate.

American citizens have generally recited the Pledge of Allegiance at important ceremonies ranging from presidential inaugurations to the beginning of the school day. The pledge has a great deal of sentimental value to many Americans, but also creates a great deal of controversy for others.

Review the Supreme Court case Elk Grove Unified School District v. Newdow, which highlights the debate.

Write a five to eight (5-8) page paper in which you:

  1. Summarize the salient points of the Supreme Court case Elk Grove Unified School District v. Newdow.
  2. Discuss the levels of the court through which the case evolved before it reached the Supreme Court.
  3. Explain the decision of the Supreme Court in this case in brief.
  4. Explain the fundamental impact that the court decision in question has had on American society in general and on ethics in American society in particular. Provide a rationale for the response.
  5. Discuss whether you believe that the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance is a religious issue or a sign of respect for the United States.
  6. Discuss whether or not you think public schools should be allowed to recite the pledge.
  7. Use at least three (3) quality academic resources. Note: Wikipedia and other Websites do not qualify as academic resources.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

  • This course requires use of Strayer Writing Standards (SWS). The format is different than other Strayer University courses. Please take a moment to review the SWS documentation for details.
  • Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length.

The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:

  • Examine the current ethical issues inherent throughout the criminal and civil justice systems.
  • Describe the dispensation of justice through the criminal and civil justice systems.
  • Use technology and information resources to research issues in the criminal court and the judicial process in America.
  • Write clearly and concisely about the American court system using proper writing mechanics and SWS style conventions.

private security assignments 1

Assignment 1

Explain why social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc., may cause or add to compulsive and or violent behavior in young adults. In your opinion, please look at the following two questions:

1. Should “sexting;” or the texting (or trading) of indecent smart phone camera photos result in criminal charges if the victim is younger than 17 years of age?

2. In urban cities, street gangs have allegedly used social media to taunt and or intimidate other gangs. This taunting has ended up in violence and homicide.

I expect a 2 + page double spaced response.

Assignment 2

The topic of public safety consolidation is gaining momentum due to the economy and pension costs. The Illinois Municipal League (IML), the International Association of Chief’s of Police (IACP) and public safety labor unions have all looked at these topics. Each has their own ideas. But, those ideas are not always agreed upon by the stakeholders, especially the employees.

Your assignment is to read the enclosed article entitled: Policing in the New Economic Environment and then in a 2+ page double spaced paper, I want to know your opinion of police/fire/EMS consolidations in your home town; or if you are employed in a public safety agency, your own employer.

Attached the article.

infancy childhood theoretical perspectives

THE OVERVIEW

For this week, identify two different theoretical perspectives discussed in your textbook chapters 3-4 (for example Piaget, Vygotsky, Freud, Systems, Eco-Systems Theory, Learning Theory, etc.) and use those theories to discuss how a social worker might guide an intervention with Marcus and his mother (see scenario below).

THE DISCUSSION

The Scenario:

Marcus is a 24-month-old toddler experiencing another separation from his mother who is a single parent enlisted infancy/childhood the in the Army. Marcus’ mother has been deployed three times since Marcus was born and he has spent each separation with a different caregiver (aunt, grandmother, and a friend). What would these changes mean for Marcus and his mother and why?

In your posting discuss how these changes might impact Marcus and his mother, and why a social worker would intervene, if at all. Then, justify how the two theories you selected might potentially guide your intervention with Marcus and his mother.

*Be sure to include at minimum two citations/sources (one must be your textbook and the other

must be an outside scholarly peer article.
