WRITING ASSIGNMENTS

Fan Letter (750 word minimum)

Write a Fan Letter to a musical theatre artist and tell them why you admire them. This assignment combines research, analysis and creativity in order to give you an in-depth understanding of the contributions of one composer, lyricist, librettist, performer, choreographer or director of stage musicals.

There are some examples of past Fan Letters at: http://www.csudh.edu/bdeluca/The%20American%20Musical/Musicals.html

You are encouraged to choose an artist from the many musicals listed in our Course Outline, which will help ensure that you are choosing a Musical Theatre artist, and not just a contemporary singer or performer. After reading about your chosen artist in our text or online sources, do some basic research on their background, their other productions, and what others have written or said about their artistry. Before writing the letter, spend time analyzing their work to get to know what you feel are the reasons that make their accomplishments stand out. Some of the questions below may help you gain familiarity with their work:

If you choose a Composer: What is the quality of this composer’s music? How does the composer use Soft or Loud values (dynamics); Fast or Slow beats (Tempo); or High or Low tones (Pitch). How do these expressive qualities create an emotional mood in their work?

If … a Librettist: Are there compelling themes in the stories of this librettist’s book? Statement made by the show? Intention in writing this work? Would you classify the musical as tragedy, comedy, melodrama, farce, tragicomedy? How does the plot succeed?

Lyricist: What makes the lyrics work for the songs of this lyricist? Can you describe their lyrics as witty, simple and straightforward, poetic?

Choreographer: What made the dances work? Were they graceful and solemn? Highly paced and sensuous? How well did the choreographer shape the movements of all the dancers?

Director: Actors cast appropriately? Imaginative use of the space? Theatrical compositions of actors and settings that helped the audience see the story being told? Movement of the actors well motivated? Pace of the action effective?

Actor/Singer: Believable characterizations? Actors related to each other believably? Performers seemed spontaneous, relaxed, and natural? Easy to understand? Clear and resonant vocal qualities? Comfortable singing range? Singing tone appropriate for the character?

After completing the research and analysis, write a Fan Letter to your chosen artist and express your admiration for them. Use the following structure for the paragraphs of the letter:

Introduction: Tell him or her why you like their work (artistic style of movement, cleverness of lyrics, importance of issues, quality of musical forms, etc.). Avoid making only general descriptions of praise, and focus more on the reasons that you appreciate their work.

Career: Express your admiration for their entire body of work and how they’ve succeeded in their career. Perhaps include awards, challenges they had to overcome, specific shows where they distinguished themselves, great roles they’ve played, etc.

Focus Musical: Go into depth on the musical from the outline. Include details of who, what, when, and where it was performed, what themes were explored, what plot line it followed, and most importantly, your artist’s contribution to the show. Use examples from the show to reveal their artistry. You might use a quoted section from the dialogue or lyrics and present why you think the quote is significant. You could include your analysis of the questions posed above. Discuss moments from the show, and what made them stand out.

Conclusion: Finish with a clear statement of what you feel was significant about their contribution to musical theatre. Perhaps share how you identify with one of their characters or found personal relevance to their performance.

Use the Fan Letter button on the Blackboard site to submit your letter as an attached MS Word document. Please use a simple title for the document, like “wicked.doc” so that Blackboard and Turnitin won’t have a problem accepting it.

The Musical Research Paper (5 page minimum)

The Musical Research Paper has a formal, professional tone, and is intended to help students develop an original and thoughtful composition that is accurate in research and analysis, well organized in structure, and clear in comprehension. The main objective of the paper is to use analysis and research to inform us about the musical itself and how it reflects American life. Avoid merely summarizing the plot, and instead, analyze how the story and characters contribute to a social reflection, making sure that you focus on the lyrics and music and/or dance of at least three songs. You can also use background information about the librettist, lyricist and composer, details about the work itself (actors/singers, directors/choreographers, dialogue, etc.), and historical facts about the world outside the musical in order to draw parallels with the musical. It is always powerful to personalize, but keep the focus on the musical and your analysis of it, rather than on your own life. Here are some questions to help you in your analysis:

How does the music, lyrics and dancing contribute to storytelling?

What are the main themes and is there a statement made by the show?

How is the musical a reaction to something happening in the country at the time?

Is there a character who represents some issue from the era? Are there characters who function as members of the society of the time?

Does the style of the music or staging reflect a quality or issue of the world of the play/musical?

How does the musical reflect the culture that produced it?

In either case, you need to argue your position by explaining how specific examples from the musical support it. Take us into the musical by drawing examples from it, rather than discussing only the era from when the show was produced. A dialogue sequence or a monologue from the libretto may serve your claim as evidence, but also consider the dramatic action (what happens in a scene), as well as characters, the lyrics of the songs, and the style of the music (which communicates feeling more directly than words).

This paper requires more than a paraphrasing from Wikipedia or enotes.com; it demands that you read the actual libretto and/or view the work itself in some form, and apply your critical thinking to it. Do NOT choose one of the six musicals we have focused on in class. The experience is meant to be your own exploration of a work of your choice that does not simply repeat something already covered in class.

The Research Paper should utilize at least 3 to 5 works as sources in the List of Works Cited, and include at least 3 to 5 citations to those sources in the text. Citing your sources not only avoids plagiarism, but gives your paper more credibility. Humanities follows MLA Documentation practice, and you need to use that system for this paper. It won’t hurt you to try a different format from what you may be used to. To acknowledge your sources in the text of the paper, type the author’s last name and a page number within parentheses at the end of the sentence that includes the author’s idea or quotation (Parenthetical Documentation). Do not put whole titles or website addresses in a citation; you will only need a List of Works Cited page at the end of the paper (arranged alphabetically) instead of the usual Endnotes and Bibliography pages. These examples should help guide you, but for specific instructions on creating all forms of documentation, you should consult the MLA Guidelines. If you do not possess a style manual, you might wish to use the online site at Purdue to help you (
).

NOTE ON SOURCES: Though you can get familiar with your musical by doing preliminary research using sources from the “surface web” (sources one can access with any search engine, like Wikipedia, bookrags, enotes, sparknotes, etc.), you need to access works for your List of Works Cited from the “deep web” (sources one can only access through the library’s portal, like JStor, Project Muse, etc.). The use of “validated critics” on sites that are subject to “peer review” ensures that your work will have the authority to provide a strong argument for your thesis.

NOTE ON WRITING: If I determine that you need assistance with your writing beyond my ability to provide it, I will assign you to a CLASS tutor and receive reports from your tutor. If you do not work with the tutor until I say such work is no longer needed, I will reduce your grade by 20%.

need assistance with body paragraphs draft assignment for unit vi

Instructions

Body of Research Paper

Follow the directions below for the completion of the body paragraphs draft assignment for Unit VI. If you have questions, please email your professor for assistance.

Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is to continue drafting your academic argumentative research paper.

Description: In this assignment, you will write three to four body paragraphs according to the form that is explained in “Lesson 3: The Body Paragraphs.” The following requirements must be included in the assignment:

  • Body Paragraphs: You will construct three to four paragraphs comprised of five to seven sentences each. Each paragraph should be between 150-200 words. At a minimum, this portion of the paper should be around 450-600 words (for three to four paragraphs); a body section of this length will meet the minimum requirements of the assignment. The following components must be included in each body paragraph (in the following order).
    • Sentence 1: Point/reason sentence: This topic sentence will contain one of your reasons.
    • Sentence 2: Explanation: In this sentence, you provide information that further develops or explains Sentence 1.
    • Sentence 3: Illustration: This sentence introduces evidence that supports the reason that is presented in Sentence 1.
    • Sentence 4: Explanation of the illustration: Because the evidence does not necessarily stand on its own, you need to provide explanation so that the reader will understand how you interpreted the evidence to come to your reason.
    • Sentences 5-6: Second illustration and explanation (optional): You may choose to include a second piece of evidence that is then followed by an explanation.
    • Last Sentence: Transition: In this sentence, you will signal to the reader that you will be moving on to another point in the next paragraph. You do this to ease the movement from one point to another.
  • Be sure to include the introduction and literature review you have already created and revised.
  • Use APA conventions to cite and reference all sources used to support your argument.

Example: Click here to access an example paper with body paragraphs. This is a real student example. It is not a perfect example for all grammar, syntax, or APA, though it is in very good shape. The goal of viewing this example should be to see the overall structure and content.

happypups speadsheet

Using Excel, complete the following:

HappyPups makes pet cameras and will be introducing their newest product, the Furbo. The Furbo is a camera that allows dog owners to check in on their pup, give their pup a treat, and talk to them while they are away. HappyPups spent $375,000 on consumer demand studies and an additional $40,000 on research and development to get the perfect product for all pet lovers. Each Furbo will sell for $195. It is expected that Furbo product will generate additional revenue from the sale of treats that are compatible with device. It is expected that 50% of Furbo purchases will result in an additional $15 net profit from treat sales at time of purchase. The Furbo has a variable cost of $125.00, and the project will incur an annual fixed cost of $1,400,000 each year. HappyPups will need to purchase a new machine to manufacture the Furbo for $2,000,000, and will be depreciated using the 3-yr MACRS schedule. HappyPups anticipates it will be able to sell the machine for $750,000 at the end of the project in three years. In order to promote the product, HappyPups will initially set aside $1,000,000 worth of inventory at the beginning of the project and will readjust NWC levels to reflect 10% of Furbo Sales (not including the treats). All inventory will be liquidated at the end of project. However, by introducing the Furbo, HappyPups anticipate that will take away roughly $1,000,000 in revenue each year from its existing pet camera line. The required return for the project is 20%, and the tax rate is 21%

  • Spent $375,000 and $40,000 on consumer demand studies and R&D
  • Sales: 80,000 units, 70,000 units, 60,000 units.
  • Retail price: $195, Variable Costs $125, and $1,400,000 in fixed costs
  • 50% of Furbo purchases will result an additional $15 in revenue from Treat sales
  • Machine to manufacture the product: $2,000,000, depreciated using 3yr MACRS schedule. Will be able to sell for $750,000 at the end of the 3rd year.
  • $1,000,000 will be set aside in inventory, and then adjust to 10% of Furbo sales (just the camera), and will be liquidated and recouped at the end of the project
  • $1,000,000 in revenue will be lost each year from HappyPup’s existing pet camera line.

essay revise 1

Hello, I message you before about the upcoming assignment. There will be 3 papers, two of them are revise. This is should be the easiy one, it is essay you wrote, I revised I bit and submit it. I need a final Portfolio Essay, around 1750 words. I would attach the requirement teacher’s comment/feed back below. Need it by Wednesday After noon!

Feedback : You wrote a very convincing argument regarding equality or rather lack of equality toward African Americans. You used your sources well, and used great logic in convincing your reader. Excellent job! My suggestions are to use more of your voice and understanding of the matter instead of paraphrasing and quoting so much. Also, make sure you include all of your important points from your thesis in your conclusion. You were missing the point about financial disparity. And lastly, try and reflect your thesis in your body paragraphs.

Requirement : Revising for the Portfolio Version is not the same as editing where one works primarily on the grammar, syntax, and spelling. “Revising” means not just to edit the essay but to rewrite it by adding and deleting material to improve its structure and development.

More specific instructions repeated from earlier modules (just in case you breezed over them without retaining the information): After you’ve revised Essays 2 and 3 based on my suggestions, try to add in at least one more additional quotation from an outside source. Basically, in order to strengthen your argument, add at least one more textual example where you feel it could improve your argument. After finding your additional outside source, perform the usual routine below:

  1. Find a location in your essay to add the source/s
  2. Introduce author’s full name and full article name the first time you cite a source
  3. Introduce each quotation/paraphrase (Cisneros argues, acknowledges, adds, admits, agrees, asserts, believes, claims, comments, confirms, contends, declares, illustrates, implies, insists, notes, observes, points out, reasons, reports, suggests, thinks, writes, “ ”). This is called a Signal Phrase (see p. 722).
  4. To quote, use EXACT words from the text (don’t alter them) and place “quotation marks” around these words. Or you may paraphrase (see below)
  5. To paraphrase, use a reworded, restructured translation of the original quotation (so that the idea is the same, but it looks nothing like the original quotation). Even though you have reworded someone else’s words, you must give the author credit to avoid plagiarism
  6. Include MLA citation to avoid plagiarism. After each quotation/paraphrase, place the writer’s last name and page number in parentheses: “The Carpet-Baggers were greedy crooks” (Wilson 12). Note where the quotations marks end and where the period is located. If you’ve already mentioned the author’s name within the sentence introduction (the Signal Phrase), then omit it in parenthesis (12). If the source is electronic, look for a set page such as that on .pdf articles. If there is no set page on the reading (such as an HTML), you do not need to cite a page.
  7. If there is no author, cite the full article name in the text or an abbreviated title name in parentheses followed by an ellipses (three dots separated by periods) w/ quotation marks around the abbreviated title. For example, “We are overworked by eight hours a day” (“Testimony. . . ” 25).
  8. Perform an analysis of the textual example by examining a quotation/paraphrase’s partssuch as word choice, tone, figurative language like personification, similes, and metaphors to show how these support the topic sentence.. You can even look at such whole story elements as the title of the story, the main idea/purpose of the story, the structure of the story if these elements help improve our understanding of why you’ve included the example in your paragraph. An analysis can also include inferences (assumptions, interpretations, argumentation approaches from Ch. 14, etc.).
  9. “Works Cited” page is required. This is an alphabetical listing of sources from which you quoted. It is the last page of your essay. You list it as follows: Author. Title of source. Title of container (book, magazine, etc.), Other contributors (like editors), Version, Number, Publisher, Publication date, Location (website or pages if hard copy or pdf).
  • If you’re unsure how to cite a source, it’s simple. Google KnightCite. From there make sure the MLA format is highlighted and fill in the blanks. When you hit submit, just cut and paste the result you’re your Works Cited page (you could also use this site if you need to write an essay in APA or other format).
  • How to Write Your Works Cited: alphabetize, double space and indent one tab the second line, and third if there is one.
  • Essay written by someone other than the editors Kirszner and Mandell: Gansberg, Martin. “Thirty-Eight Who Saw Murder Didn’t Call the Police.” Patterns for College Writing: A Rhetoric Reader and Guide, Laurie G. Kirszer and Stephen Mandell, 13th, Boston (city optional), Bedford/St. Martin’s, 2015, pp. 128-131.
  • Essay or introduction written by the editors Kirszner and Mandell Kirszner, Laurie G. and Stephen R. Mandell, eds. “Understanding Argumentation and Persuasion.” Patters for College Writing: A Rhetoric Reader and Guide, 13th ed., Boston, Bedford/St. Martin’s, 2015, pp. 524-525.
  • For our library Databases EbscoHost and Sirs, you can actually email yourself the citation. Again, you can always cite outside sources by googling KnightCite and submitting all the relevant information.

Do NOT include an outline but DO include a Works Cited page for each essay. When you include at least one additional Outside/Researched Source to Essays 2 and 3 though more outside sources would be even better, what you’ll be doing is bringing in quotations from another outside library database source (EbscoHost or SIRS preferably). I showed you a video on how to do this in Week 08: Bringing in Outside Sources. You could research facts, statistics, or professional opinions related to your topic. If you do not properly cite this research in MLA format, your grade will suffer. Be sure to include in-text citations and a Works Cited list for this entry. For help, go to https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/747/01/ (Links to an external site.). Another helpful resource I’ve recommended before is to use Calvin College’s Knight Cite: https://www.calvin.edu/library/knightcite/ (Links to an external site.)
