week 5 discussion psy

For this week’s discussion, we will explore common mental health disorders. Select a disorder from the list below that you are not familiar with, meaning you or another person you know does not have this disorder. In other words, select a disorder that you would like to know more about. In your post:

Identify the disorder that you selected.

Write about what characterizes that disorder. (What are the symptoms?)

Describe what makes you curious about this disorder.

Choose from this list of disorders:

Substance Use Disorder

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

Insomnia Disorder

Agoraphobia

Dyslexia

Anorexia

Autism Spectrum Disorder

Learning about a disorder that you are not familiar with can help you to understand the range of disorders that are present in modern-day society. It can also give you an idea of the various ways in which psychological disorders affect others.

Note: If you are already familiar with these disorders, you can either choose one to research and learn more about, or you can choose a different disorder.

Choose from one on Psych Central’s site: Symptoms & Treatments of Mental Disorders.

To receive full credit, remember to write 2 posts in the discussion: one original and a response to another student. Your original should be at least 7 sentences, and your reply should be 4 sentences.

Discussion #4

Please read the Case Study on page 195 and explain how would you  help Toby and his family as  a teacher, therapist or counselor. What are some recommendations or referrals that you would make? APA style please and use you own words.

Discussion: The Future of Leadership

As a scholar-practitioner, it is important to stay abreast of current leadership research and practice. In doing so, you have the opportunity to learn about trends in the field that may benefit you, as a leader, or your client. Like any other field, some trends will be fleeting, and some will persist.

For this Discussion, you will review recent volumes of leadership journals and visit leadership-specific websites to identify trends that you think will persist. You also will consider how such trends will change the practice of leadership.

To Prepare: Review the most recent volumes in the journals from the Learning Resources. Also, peruse the websites listed in the Learning Resources. Consider recurring themes related to leadership in the journals and on the websites. Based on the themes, identify one current leadership trend that you think will still be relevant in the future. Think about how the trend will change the future practice of leadership and the knowledge, skills, and abilities leaders would need to possess if the trend continues in the future. By Day 3

Describe one current leadership trend you think will still be relevant in the future, and explain why. Then provide two examples of how the trend might change the future practice of leadership. Be specific. Finally, describe knowledge, skills, and abilities that leaders would need to possess if the trend continues in the future. By Day 5

Discussion 1: Test Misuse

Test ethics cover both the creation and use of tests. For this Discussion, you concentrate on the implications of test misuse. These can relate to test use with diverse groups, licensure issues, adverse impact, or test security, to name a few.

Some important basic ethical principles regarding testing are as follows: The construction of tests needs to be done using appropriate psychometric procedures so that the test will provide valid measurement. When tests are used, they need to be properly selected. The test should be valid for the purpose used and should not be outdated. The selection should take into account the purpose of the testing and should also take into account the examinee’s language, culture, and disabilities. The test needs to be administered according to proper protocol in order to maintain standardization. The test needs to be interpreted and reported fairly, and the report needs to be stored properly. The responsible psychology professional should prevent misinterpretation and should prevent reporting that results in incorrect decisions or that causes the client unnecessary emotional harm. He or she should also protect the client’s confidentiality. Test givers must maintain the security of test materials. Many tests, such as the Wechsler intelligence tests or the MMPI, have been developed over a period of decades. Public familiarity with these tests would destroy their usefulness. Test publishers generally have standards controlling who can buy and use their tests. A test has an “adverse impact” when it results in substantially different employment decisions (e.g., hiring, promotion, termination) for one group versus another group. This adverse impact is unlawful if there is no justification for it. For instance, some jobs might have tests of physical strength that result in fewer women being hired. The employer would need to demonstrate that physical strength is a legitimate job requirement.

To prepare for this Discussion, think of potential effects of tests not being administered, stored, or interpreted according to ethical principles. Consider the effects on both the individuals being tested and, potentially, the population at large.

With these thoughts in mind:

Post by Day 3 two potential effects of test misuse on individuals being tested and on the population at large. Support your answer with references to the APA Code of Ethics and other relevant standards.

Be sure to support your postings and responses with specific references to the Learning Resources.

Read a selection of your colleagues’ postings.

Social Psychology Discussion Question

Please answer the following questions, 300 or more words and cite 2 sources.  Explain the looking-glass metaphor. How does the looking-glass translate into an idea of the self? How has technology changed the search for and experience of “authentic” selves in the postmodern era? How has it changed the nature of our relationships and self presentations?

Social Psychology Discussion – 300 or more words and cite sources

Discussion Question:

Violence against women is a key concern within feminism today. Below are a variety of different issues, movements, or organizations focused on violence against women. The causes range in scope and goals. Review the information on the web links provided and discuss the following questions. Please explore and discuss at least 2 different links in your original post. Try to make sure each link is addressed within the group by choosing to include one that no one has explored.  How is the problem defined? What are the strategies for social change? What programs or initiatives are related to the topic? Does this organization/group/movement frame their action as feminists? If not, would you consider this a feminist cause? What are the potential controversies and debates around the issue? How might an opponent of the cause/movement/organization frame their position? How might you engage in dialogue with them? Links:

Discussion: Data Analysis and Dissemination

“I don’t know.” Not knowing something is difficult for many people to admit for a variety of reasons: they don’t want to look unknowledgeable, they want to impress someone, or they are afraid of the truth. However, admitting what you do not know is a critical component of being a reflective practitioner. If you only focus on the things you know, you will stagnate. You will never explore new ideas, read innovative research, or improve your practice. In other words, you can never become stronger unless you focus on recognizing and developing your weaknesses.

In this Discussion, you complete a self-reflection regarding areas in program evaluation about which you feel confident and those in which you are not as confident. You will explain how you will use these weaker areas as catalysts for professional development and what resources you need to complete the task. To Prepare

This week’s Learning Resources outline techniques that may be used for data analysis and outcome dissemination in program evaluation. You are asked to complete a self-reflection this week regarding areas in these two steps of program evaluation about which you feel confident and those in which you feel you need more professional development.

Post a description of at least two areas related to data analysis and outcome dissemination about which you would like to further professionally develop beyond the course. Explain how you will use these interests or challenge areas as catalysts for professional development and how you will grow your knowledge in these areas, or what resources you might use to complete tasks cooperatively as an evaluation team.

GUILT OR FEAR APPEAL

Bring to mind pictures of sad puppy eyes and scrawny cats in dirty cages. Or think of images of impoverished children and messages about how a small gift can make a huge difference in their lives. Or recall public service announcements that feature frightening images of the effects of drug use and smoking. Consider how these and similar types of appeals use guilt or fear to try to persuade you to take action.

What are the ethical issues around using persuasive techniques that are intended to make recipients feel uncomfortable but for beneficial reasons? That is one of the issues you will explore this week through this Discussion. You will respond to a scenario in which you, as a professional in the line of work you currently do or would like to do, are tasked with designing a strong message using either the guilt or the fear appeal. As you create your messages, consider the relationship between the outcome you hope to achieve and the ethics of how you choose to get there.

To prepare:  Review the Week 5 Learning Resources. Develop the scenario by incorporating the following details. You may make up these details or base them on your workplace experiences. Include: Name and type of agency or organization Its purpose or mission Purpose of the message you are creating and what issue(s) it aims to address Target audience for the message  Consider whether the fear or guilt appeal will be more effective for the target audience and to achieve the message goals. Create the text of the message, to include in your Discussion post.  Check your message for ethical compliance using the code of ethics associated with the type of professional organization you chose.
