I believe a lot of problems start to steam at a very young age for most people. Alex issues come from in my eyes from not getting the proper attention he needed. He also lacked confidence and that can really tear someone down. They could get torn down from it, but from proper care he was getting from the people and medication I think could help the most and he needed that. It takes a long time for someone to start loving there self after not thinking they are enough to even live and that is reasonable. How ever long it takes you to get back on track should not matter.

Robins situation you cannot just think what worked for one chid could work for the next. You have to see if that child has even talked to someone about how he feels. Most of the time they just have a lot going on and just need to talk to someone about how they can get through. There home life may not be like the person before him. That also effects a person and the type of medication that he/she is on. You have more stress or anything slightly different than the other person that is on the same medication it can be thrown off. He also did not have the same support as Alex. If he actually talked to someone that specialized in disorders in mood swings and they felt like they could not help then think of other opinion, but medication should not be your first opinion. Most medication throws off everything else in the body, it do not just fix that one problem and that is it. It makes everything off balance and now you have new problems because you messed with one thing that could have went without medicine.

ADHD is a sort of mental condition that I believe now-a-days runs very common in children to the point where almost every hyper child is tested for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder or something of the like from a very young age. Personally, I believe that being under medication should be a choice to the individual themselves, unless their unmedicated behavior can directly and harmfully affect other people. In Alex’s case, it appears that his self-esteem suffered immensely, and his lack of attention to not only himself and his health but a lack of interest and ability to focus in school seemed to directly affect this as well. This lead to depression and very low self-esteem and his parents believed that ADHD medication would benefit him the most. It seemed to be effective, as it helped Alex get better not only mentally but also in school.

As for Robin, he was diagnosed very young and was on medication since the 4th grade, despite his vocalization that he did not like the drugs, his parents changed the medication and had him on it still. Robin began to become unhappy and unmotivated to the point where his parents hospitalized him. It affected him so much that his teachers didn’t know how to react around him. However, eventually, Robin refused to take his medication despite his mother’s best efforts.

I will only further reiterate my earlier opinion on the subject– I believe that medication should always be up to the person taking it, and that when it comes to medicating your children, I believe that proper communication between parent and child should be done to ensure that this is in fact in the child’s best benefit.

These videos and articles were very interesting. Vasopressin was not something I had heard of before. Neither was Gene 334.  From this content I have learned that there may be biological factors that make men and women susceptible to cheating or being less likely to commit to one partner. The first video focused on men who cheat and proposed that it might have something to do with the way that gene334 interacted with vasopressin in males. However, the two written articles focused on attractive women with high hormone levels that made them more prone to being unfaithful. The first video also suggested that environment can override the genetic predisposition. I do not recall that being mentioned in the written articles concerning the women.

The TED Talk with Helen Fisher was the more informative and reliable discussion out of all the material listed in my opinion. The study of romantic love and the processes that are involved has been her main focus of study for 30 years. She approaches the topic from all angles and even refers to patterns that existed in ancient times. She has done studies, supplies statistical data and has performed MRI’s. She does not consider romantic love to be an emotion. It is the result of three different brain systems. Sometimes all three of the brain systems are connected and focused on one individual, and sometimes each system can be applied separately. She says that is why some are able to be in love with more than one person. That could lead to infidelity or lack of commitment to one person.

The first video did have statistics and studies to back up their statements. I do believe that all humans can be born susceptible to certain patterns of behavior, but environment and other factors can lead to different outcomes. Alcoholism runs through each side of my family. My father is on his fourth marriage and my mother is on her fifth marriage. There very well may be a gene that can be identified that contributes to these two issues. I would be likely to inherit those same genes from both of my parents. However, I only drink alcohol twice a year and I have been married for 19 years. I feel that I would not only be genetically predisposed to alcoholism and infidelity, but my environment would have encouraged it or at least made it acceptable. I strongly believe that people have the power to choose what is acceptable and what is not acceptable. If someone is happy to cheat on their partner, it is their conscious choice to do so. Monogamy may not be everyone’s cup of tea.

Ultimately, I think infidelity is a sign that you may not truly love your significant other. Perhaps all three of your brain systems are not focused on one person. If that is the case, that is ok. You don’t have to love someone just because they love you. I feel that truly loving someone means that you consider their wellbeing a high priority. You would not intentionally do anything that would cause them physical or emotional pain. I don’t think that you can cheat on someone that you love. Occasionally, people will cheat because they know it will end a relationship that they no longer want to be a part of. Regardless of the specific reason, I feel infidelity is something people do because they are not happy or they think cheating will make them happier.

Biology may have a role in how we find partners or what we look for in a mate in order to reproduce. I think the specific characteristics that we look for are deeply ingrained in humans and were originally meant for optimizing reproduction. Our brains have many intricacies and we have definitely evolved as a species. However, basic needs and the motivation to acquire them surely can be studied and evaluated by studying the brain.

It would make sense that people, not just women, that have higher hormone levels would be more likely to cheat on their significant other.  But that’s not the only thing that can cause a person to be unfaithful. Other reasons include but are not limited to: not receiving enough pleasure from your SO, not maintaining that emotional connection, fighting with your SO a lot, etc.  People tend to seek out another person’s attention when their SO is ignoring them or if they just got in a big argument. This has the chance of leading to people being unfaithful. I think all people have the chance to cheat and that they choose to do so of their own free will.

Hormone levels do have an effect on our brain but maybe not in the sense that the articles are mentioning.  People go to the doctor to find out if they’re feeling depressed or if they’re having mood swings because of a chemical imbalance or another reason.  I have personally done this and it ended up not being a chemical imbalance. I would also not trust the Today Show over the articles because news shows tend to not have the correct information.  This leads to spreading misinformation which can cause a lot of problems down the road. I also tend to trust articles more because of the sources and I can more easily check the information to see if it’s correct or not.

After watching Cheating Gene video, I learnt that vasopressin is important to make strong bonding between partners. But the gene 334 which is mainly present in men can cause them to cheat their partners. From Helen Fisher’s research, I learnt that how biology is connected to the behavior of people in love. I also learnt how our brain and hormones are associated with our capability of love and attachment. Also, I learnt the impact of women on business, society, relationship, and love.

I found both researches very informative. I was surprise to know that infidelity is caused by hormonal changes. How increase or decrease level of hormones such as dopamine, serotonin, and vasopressin affect the relationship. I agree with these researches, but I also believe that only these factors are not responsible for infidelity. I think that infidelity is caused by lack of mutual respect and trust between the partners. Also, it is caused by lack of closeness between couples where they can openly share personal feelings, expectations, care, and understanding. Blaming only the gene as cause of infidelity does not make sense.

One of my friends experienced divorce due to infidelity. In their case, wife was unfaithful because she was interested in someone else. Her husband was not making enough money, but he loved her so much. Their relationship problems grew day by day ending up with divorce.

I agree that brain and gene play an important role in human motivation and relationships, but in my opinion brain and gene alone do not cause behavior, it is also influenced by the environment.

Children being so young (in third grade), they are able to recognize racism and can tell how people are treated differently. This experiment is an interesting way to show kids it does not matter how people look; everyone should be treated equal. The issue of racism is still occurring till this day.

When the experiment started taking place you could also immediately see the effect it had on the kids. It soon turned the blue-eyed kids into nasty and discriminating by the end of day. You could see the pain in the brown-eyed kids face and how lowered their self-esteem. She soon tried the reverse where brown-eyed children were better, and they were instantly more motivated and self-confident. The blue-eyed kids were soon discouraged and were not performing in school as well.

It is an important lesson to show people (including children) how much discrimination can cause a person to not perform as well and how it lowers one’s self-esteem. The lesson to learn from this experiment that no one enjoys being looked down upon, and we should treat each other with respect, putting aside their looks and focusing on how they behave.

To be honest, I cried throughout the entire video. I am a black woman and I have been discriminated many times throughout my life. I have been called the N-word and told to go back to Africa, beaten for having a darker hue than my Caucasian classmates and many other things that I will refrain from mentioning here. As a child growing up, I was crippled by the fear of being a female with brown skin. I always told myself that I have two strikes against me…i am not white and im a female. I remember praying to God to make me into a white man. A white man? Yes a white man because then I could be powerful, get any job I wanted, become rich and didn’t have to face discrimination (that was a conceived thought in my head at that time) . I would wake up angry when I looked in the mirror and still saw the brown reflection in the mirror staring back at me. But, as I grew older, I accepted the fact that God made me like this for a reason. I accepted the fact that I am beautiful just the way I am. I refuse to let those ignorant people prevent me from enjoying my life and seeing the beauty in my diversity.

However, I must commend Ms. Jane, the teacher, for conducting that experiment with her third graders and then taking it to that workshop with the adults. She was very brave for doing so and I wish that instructors and work administrators would do this experiment in their environment.

As I watched the initial experiment amongst the third grade students, I realized that discrimination is a learned behavior. People are not born to be racist. People are taught to be racist.

It was shocking to find out that when the teacher made the brown-eyed people the superior group over the blue-eyed group on the second day of the experiment, the blue-eyed group did worse on their class assignment than the day before when they had the upper hand and treated better. That confirms that if a person is told that they are stupid or no good or treated inferior by an authoritative person whom they respect, it can do a lot of damage to their self esteem. Words have a lot of power. This is why guardians, teachers, and parents have to be careful of the words that they speak to their children. If you call your child stupid, your child will begin to believe that they are and act out. However, if a child is praised and told that they are intelligent, the child has a higher chance of believing that they are. The concept applies to adults, as well.

I still don’t understand the concept of why certain groups of people have to make themselves superior than other groups. When a person decides to hate another person based on their looks, accents, hair texture, facial features, skin color, educational status, it shows that the person has some low self esteem issues and they lack love.

I believe that the world is a better place because of the diversity of cultures and people. I like to use the analogy of a beautiful flower garden to describe the various ethnic groups and culture in the world. A garden with just red roses is beautiful, but imagine the magnificent beauty if the garden had yellow daffodils, white daisies, red roses, pink carnations, blue hydrangeas, etc. That garden would be exquisite!

Diversity is beautiful. Discrimination is ugly.

I learned so much from this. I never have seen a study such as this, especially one with such immediate effects on its controlled groups. Afterwards I started wondering about todays effects on minorities, specifically hispanics in America In the past four years. I’ve learned that the way society can harm youth by implementing these discriminations at such a young age, as well as how moldable  as individuals we are. Each time this study was tested out, The inferior groups self-esteem dropped. Along with this, so did their test scores. Each superior group had individuals who were effected by the study, in which they were participating and agreeing with Mrs. Elliot on how the other group is inferior. Especially in the study with the Third graders. As one of the third graders grew up to then state “I was best friends with someone one day, the next they were my enemy.” One individual stated in the Iowa study, “I didn’t speak up for the other group, because then I would’ve been attacked.” This just shows how morals disappear through fear. Unfortunately in our society there are still individuals who pick sides based on fear of being attacked. This fuels the problem even further as individuals as humans are more likely to pick the winning sides. I learned that some people wake up feeling discriminated against daily. In today’s society I feel that hispanics will feel this way. The irony in this today is that part of Trump’s wall separating Mexico and America had fallen due to strong winds. My social media is blowing up with controversial statements of the topic. After watching this video, I cannot see how one could agree with this division of The American and The Mexican borders. Especially after witnessing the effects through this study.

As a young white southern female I have too felt discrimination. In my experience I have felt it through my gender. As a woman can be seen as incompetent compared to males. Ive been condescended while working at IKEA by a caucasian male. He started a week or so after me, and while closing the store one night alone with him he stated, “I don’t know how you got this job.” He didn’t specify why and my faint heart didn’t want to know. Our only difference was through gender, age, and that I was full-time and he part-time. He eventually was promoted despite his many offenses towards many other female employees. After dealing with his other condescending remarks I eventually spoke up about it, along with many other issues to an anonymous line IKEA calls Ispeak. Soon after my whole phone report was played aloud in a meeting. I didn’t know about this until many months later. After I eventually quit He even spoke to one of my friends “I hope it wasn’t because of me.” Unfortunately, around the time frame of this meeting, I was trying to get promoted. Through many attempts I was told I didn’t receive positions due to lack of knowledge. In reaction to that, I then paid and took classes just to learn the program, AutoCAD. Before quitting, I was even asked if I could do a presentation on AutoCAD to teach my coworkers the program. Although I was the lowest paid in my department. If I only knew then what I know now.

In viewing this news clip, my opinion is that these doctors, and the foster centers are both trying to make or save the most money. These foster children are prescribed these medications due to the fact that they are simply cheaper than sending them to an actual psychiatrist in order to find out the root causes of their problems and get them on the right medication if they even need said medication. These doctors the children go to see the children and foster system as an easy way to make money from the state by prescribing them high level psychiatric drugs which are completely unnecessary resulting in permanent damage to the children physically and mentally. I believe this practice is completely unethical and it is a mirror image of the current opioid crisis that is occurring today where people become addicted to these damaging drugs and the doctors allow or even instigate the addiction in order to make money.
