Section 2 – position statement

Milestone Two is due this module. Create a draft of Section II, Part A: Position Statement for the final project. The previous assignments and reading materials for this course have prepared you to do the following: Develop a position statement for your selected theory Include your theory’s relevance in personality      psychology today Support your position statement and cite your sources.

Overview: This assignment will be your first draft of Section II, Part A of the final project. You have already selected a theorist from the list of approved theorists. In your first milestone, you created an outline for the background section of your final project. Be sure to consider the feedback you received on your first milestone and how it will influence the position statement you write for this milestone. You will complete several milestones throughout the course that have you work on different sections of the final theoretical analysis. Incorporate feedback from your instructor into your paper to improve your final submission. Be sure to refer to the research you have collected in your research table as you approach this milestone.

Prompt: For this assignment, you will write a draft of Section II, Part A of the final project. You will state your position regarding your theory’s continuing relevance in the field of personality psychology. Then, you will be tasked with defending that position in a number of ways, including evaluating its current use.

A. Position Statement

i. Develop a position statement regarding your theory’s continued relevance in personality psychology today. Your statement must be supported with logical rationale.

ii. Evaluate the validity and accuracy of secondary research using your theory, explaining how effectively it supports your position statement. Be sure to cite specific examples from the research in your response.

iii. Evaluate your theory’s appropriateness for a range of cultural perspectives in its contemporary use, and explain how effectively this supports your position statement. Be sure to cite relevant sources in your response. In other words, how well does this theory make testable predictions about human behavior across a range of cultural perspectives, including those of special populations?

Guidelines for Submission: Your paper should be submitted as a 3 to 4 page Microsoft Word document with double spacing, 12-point Times New Roman font, one-inch margins, and a reference page with at least three sources cited in APA format.

socw 6060- Discussion: Evaluating Psychoanalytical Theory

Sigmund Freud is often hailed as the father of psychoanalytical theory. His theory was the first to point to the influence of early childhood experiences. However, psychoanalytical theory has received a lot of criticism. Although theories are supposed to be objective and value-free, they are developed within a sociocultural and political context. For example, with historical perspective, it is possible to see that values within the Western Victorian era influenced Freud as he developed his theory. Another criticism is that many psychoanalytical concepts cannot be measured. For example, how do you measure the id, ego, and superego or the notion of unconscious conflicts? As a result, it is difficult to test the accuracy of these concepts using social science research methods.

It is important to critically evaluate theories for their practical use. For example, is it appropriate to use a theory when working with diverse populations or with populations different from those with whom the theory was normed (e.g., women, racial and ethnic minority groups, those who are economically disadvantaged)? Finally, are the assumptions of theories consistent with the values underlying the field? In this Discussion, you respond to some of these concerns.

To prepare, read the following from the Learning Resources: Auld, F., Hyman, M., & Rudzinski, D. (2005). How is therapy with women different? In Resolution and inner conflict: An introduction to psychoanalytic therapy (pp. 217–236). Washington DC: American Psychological Association. National Association of Social Workers. (2008). Code of ethics of the National Association of Social Workers. Retrieved from https://www.socialworkers.org/About/Ethics/Code-of-Ethics/Code-of-Ethics-English
Post: Summarize the assumptions of Freud’s psychoanalytical theory in 2 to 3 sentences. Explain whether you believe it is appropriate to apply psychoanalytic theory to women and individuals from racial and ethnic minority groups. Explain whether you believe psychoanalytic theory is consistent with social work values and social work ethics.

socw 6301- Discussion: Formulating Research Questions

Research problems can come from a variety of places. A topic can come up during a discussion with a colleague that motivates you to want to learn more about it. You may have a question for which you cannot find an answer, so you decide to conduct a research study in hopes of finding an answer. You may identify a particular gap in knowledge and be inclined to investigate that gap and close it with the results of a research study.

For this Discussion, consider how crafting a good research question is the cornerstone for designing robust studies that yield useable data. Review the Sessions episode on the Talia Johnson case. Locate two articles authored by the researcher David Lisak on the topics of the undetected rapist and predatory nature.

Post two potential research questions related to the Sessions episode. Consider potential ethical or political issues related to the feasibility of investigating the questions.  Evaluate each question in terms of how it might:Contribute to development of new knowledge for social workLead to more effective practice interventionsLead to social changeBe useful to other researchersFinally, explain the criteria you used to decide which sources of information should be included. Please use the resources to support your answer.

Discuss which course activities and readings were most helpful to you:       What useful career information did you came away with? How do you think you will use critical thinking, research skills, and competencies that were emphasized in the course when you are working as a psychologist? How do you think you might use the services of Capella’s Career Center to help you stay focused on your professional goals, now and throughout your program? Discuss how your interests in psychology, career vision, and professional perspective have changed during this course. Identify the greatest challenges you see that lie ahead for you. How will you deal with those challenges? Include what you have learned about yourself throughout this course. Include what you are most excited about related to your career plan. Explain how you will contribute to your field and the welfare of your clients when you are a working psychologist. Specify ways in which you envision yourself giving back to your community beyond practicing in field. Look ahead to the end of your career, and identify what you would like your legacy to be.

Be sure to cite course readings to support your statements.

discussion part II

Yes, I believe Stanley Milgram’s Study of Disobedience is unethical. I believe it is unethical for a few reasons. One reason is that he clearly manipulated those who participated in the study. He did this by when he had those participating draws from the hat to determine the role. In which the participants did not know the roles were rigged up front. “…the participant was always the teacher and Mr. Wallace (the confederate) was always the learner (Gross, 2006)”. It was also mentioned to those participating while doing the study that withdraws was not possible. This was another form of manipulation used by Stanley. He also conducted the study at Yale which led participants to believe they were really involved in something prestigious.       In the Journal of Science and Engineering Ethics, written by Dan Macarthur, he starts out by saying if Milgram were to attempt to perform any of these studies he did back in the 1960’s they would not be approved by the ethics board (McArthur, 2009). “The reasons for this are well known among social scientists and applied ethicists (McArthur, 2009)”. “The research subjects were subjected to psychological harm without appreciating the risks from the beginning, deception was used without what today would count as acceptable debriefing and so on (McArthur, 2009)”. Regardless of whether, or not there was a high level of ethics set back then he knew what he was doing. Setting the situation for the study at Yale made the test subjects trust him which was completely wrong.

Discussion III

Stanley Milgram’s study of obedience reminded me a lot of the Stanford prison experiment, a lot of what happened during that experiment was present in this study. In the evaluation of the study it was stated that participants were deceived as to the exact nature of the study for which they had volunteered, and by making them believe they were administering real electric shocks to a real participant (Milgram, 1963). One could look at this and see something unethical about Milgram’s method of informing interested participants of the study. However, I think he may have done this to help point out that our minds and how we assess information determine what may feel real to a person or not. Just think of a person holding gun aiming it the desired target; do you think the person with the gun aimed at him will risk being shot regardless of the gun being loaded or not. A person’s mind creates it’s on truth. After the experiment had been done, Milgram fully explained the study in full detail and assessed the participants to see how the study affected them. Milgram’s methods may have been unorthodox, but what he aimed for was genius, and I don’t believe the study was unethical.  References:  Milgram. S (1963) Behavioural Study of Obedience. Human Interactions 3-1

What ideas or phrases come to mind when you hear the term intelligence? Prior to the current emphasis on emotional and social intelligence, individuals tended to associate intelligence with one measurement: intelligence quotient or the IQ. While the IQ focuses on intellectual abilities, emotional intelligence focuses on an individual’s awareness of his or her feelings and the feelings of others, and social intelligence focuses on an individual’s interpersonal skills (Zastrow & Kirst-Ashman, 2016, pp. 506-509).

To prepare for this Discussion, read “Working With People With Disabilities: The Case of Andres” on pages 28–31 in Social Work Case Studies: Foundation Year. Consider what you have learned about social and emotional intelligence in this week’s resources as well as what you learn about the person and environment as it relates to young and middle adulthood.

Post a Discussion that includes the following: An explanation of how social and emotional intelligence are related to cultural factors An explanation about how you, as a social worker, might apply the concepts of emotional and/or social intelligence to the case of Andres An explanation of how social workers, in general, might apply social and emotional intelligence to social work practice. (Include a specific example in the explanation.)
