Week 1 Discussion

Choose a poem from the list below. Read all of the poems before making your choice; do not simply choose the first one you read. If a poem has already been discussed by two other students, choose another one from the list. We want to have an interesting discussion of a variety of poems! (Check the closed list and the discussion thread before posting.)

TIPS:   Do not repost the poem or directions in your response.  Use your poem’s title as the title of your post, and put quotation marks around the title. Mention the title and author in your post, and give specific examples from the poem to illustrate your points. Include at least one quotation from the poem, and use in-text citations and an end reference to document your source. See the model post in the directions for an example response. Use the eBook as your source for the poem. Do not use outside sources for any assignment until we reach Week 5’s library assignment. Do not use an attachment. Post directly into the response area.

You will give an end reference in each discussion this session. The reference for this one will include your poet and poem. The automatic reference given by the textbook is incomplete, so do not use it. If you need help, see the example I posted in the thread starter on how to cite poetry.

There are no right/wrong answers and can be many perspectives on a poem, so relax and have fun with the assignment. Please let me know if you have any questions. I’m here to help!

CLC – Health Promotion and Community Resource Teaching Project BY 2/20

Topic of Diabetes and it’s impact in pregnancy to the mother and baby. 

This is a Collaborative Learning Community (CLC) assignment.

An important role of nursing is to provide health promotion and disease prevention. Review the 2020 Topics and Objectives on the Healthy People website. Choose a topic of interest that you would like to address, in conjunction with a population at-risk for the associated topic. Submit the topic and associated group to your instructor for approval.

Create a 15-20-slide PowerPoint presentation for your topic and focus group. Include speaker notes and citations for each slide, and create a slide at the end for References.

Address the following: Describe the approved topic and associated population your group has selected. Discuss how this topic adversely affects the population. How does health disparity affect this population? Explain evidence-based approaches that can optimize health for this population. How do these approaches minimize health disparity among affected populations? Outline a proposal for health education that can be used in a family-centered health promotion to address the issue for the target population. Ensure your proposal is based on evidence-based practice. Present a general profile of at least one health-related organization for the selected focus topic. Present two resources, national or local, for the proposed education plan that can be utilized by the provider or the patient. Identify interdisciplinary health professionals important to include in the health promotion. What is their role? Why is their involvement significant?

Cite at least three peer-reviewed or scholarly sources to complete this assignment. Sources should be published within the last 5 years and appropriate for the assignment criteria and public health content.

Poetry Analysis – Rough Draft

By the due date assigned, attach the rough draft of your essay as a Microsoft Word document to the Discussion Area. By the end of the week, comment on at least two of your classmate’s submissions using the peer review questions provided below.

The essay assignment for this week is to compose a paper of at least 750 words in which you offer your interpretation of a literary element poem (such as theme, imagery, symbolism, or characterization) in one of the assigned poems. You may choose any poem from our reading list except for “The Chimney Sweeper.” If you wish, you may base your paper on the analysis you began in this week’s discussion.

Tips for the Essay Open your introduction with an engaging opener, such as a question, quote from the poem, or interesting idea. Then, connect to the poem and mention the title and the author. End your introduction with a thesis statement that interprets one literary element of the poem (such as theme, imagery, symbolism, or characterization). The body paragraphs should support your thesis. Present specific aspects of the poem that help to illustrate your points. Make sure to quote from the poem and analyze specific lines that support your argument. Include a strong concluding paragraph that summarizes your main points and explains the significance of the thesis.

APA Reminder

Use APA style for formatting the essay and for source citations. Begin with a title page. Include a running header, and use proper font and spacing. End with a separate references page. Refer to the Week 1 lecture on avoiding plagiarism for an APA essay template and additional resources.

Important Note: Do not do any outside research for this essay. This analysis should be your own insights regarding the poem. If you need help, refer to the sample student paper shared in the lecture on themes, and contact your instructor with questions.
