XEROX CORPORATION* Xerox Corporation is in the information products and systems business worldwide. Everyone is familiar with the Xerox copy machines, but the company is involved in many other businesses as well. Xerox’s Multinational Documentation & Training Services (MD&TS) provides customers with timely, cost-effective, and high-quality communication services. The four basic services of MD&TS are documentation, training. translation, and publishing. The professional writers and translators working for MD&TS use an online computerized publication system. For this system, management was interested in determining the effect of different system configurations on performance. Specifically, for a given system configuration, management was interested in determining the following: 1. The probability of a user being refused access by the system because of an excess number of users. 2. The probability of any specific number of users being on the system simultaneously. A computer simulation model was developed for the purpose of determining these probabilities. In order to build the simulation model, it was necessary to identify the probability distribution for two key random variables: 1. The On Time per session (the length of time a user is on the system). 2. The Idle Time per session (the length of time between sessions). Based on a survey of users, the probability distribution of on time per session was approximated as shown in the following table. Another probability distribution was developed for the random variable indicating idle time per session. These two probability distributions were key inputs to the simulation model. The results from the simulation study helped MD&TS determine a system configuration that ensured a near-zero probability that a user would be refused access to the system. x value / probability of x 10 0.05 20 0.06 30 0.08 40 0.20 50 0.25 60 0.20 70 0.08 80 0.06 90 0.02 _______________________ *This problem is from Anderson, Sweeney and Williams, Quantitative Methods for Business, 8e, Thompson Learning Questions to Answer: 1. What is the expected value of the on time per session based on information given? What is your interpretation of this value? 2. What is the variance and standard deviation of this data? 3. Without assuming a particular theoretical distribution (e.g. normal) what is the probability the on time per session would be between 35 and 65 minutes? (This question is a little tricky! Hence always a good exam question.) 4. Now, with assuming a normal distribution what would your answer to #3 be — use above calculated values of the mean and standard deviation. 5. How would your answers to #1, #2 and #4 change if the above data were just nine discrete demand points. (Hint: formulas not in the text, but given in lecture.) Assume that the standard deviation is calculated by using n – 1 in the denominator. 6. What is the basic difference between ungrouped and grouped data? Explain. 7. What would be the numerical value of the range (the what? this is a trick statistics question — in the business school we don’t need to know what a range is.) under the assumption in #5? 8. Question #1 and #2 measure two moments (characteristics) of distributions. What are the other two moments of distributions.

The law of supply states that as the price of a good rises, the quantity supplied decreases. true false The law of demand states that as the price of a good rises, the quantity demanded decreases. true false A decrease in consumer income shifts the demand curve leftward. true false A rise in the price of chicken feed shifts the supply curve of chickens leftward. true false If both the demand and supply curves shift equal distances rightward, the equilibrium price rises. true false A rise in the price of popcorn shifts the demand curve for popcorn rightward. true false New technology for manufacturing computer chips is developed. The new technology will contribute to cheaper production of computer chips contribute to a decrease in the supply of computer chips not affect the supply of computer chips New cars are a normal good. Suppose the economy enters a period of strong economic expansion so that consumer incomes increase substantially. What will happen to the demand for new cars? It will increase because a rise in overall income produces an increase in demand for normal goods. It will stay the same because people will increase the purchase of other goods. It will decrease because a rise in overall income produces a decrease in demand for normal goods. A rise in the price of a game of bowling will decrease the demand for bowling balls increase the demand for bowling balls result in a lot more people bowling decrease the demand for cars Gruel is an inferior good. Hence, an increase in consumer income decreases the supply of gruel increases the supply of gruel decreases the demand for gruel increases the demand for gruel It costs Balls-R-Us, a supplier of soccer balls, $3.00 to produce each soccer ball and $300.00 to make one hundred soccer balls. It is able to sell these soccer balls for $10.00 each. What is the marginal cost of producing soccer balls? $10.00 $300.00 $3.00 $1.00 Since prices don’t favor producers or consumers, they are described as fixed neutral flexible biased At any given price, a surplus of oranges will occur when the quantity demanded is more than the quantity supplied the quantity demanded is the same as the quantity supplied the quantity supplied is less than the quantity demanded the quantity supplied is greater than the quantity demanded A price compromise between buyer and seller is known as a(n) equilibrium price target price deficiency payment adjustment price The government sets a price ceiling on pizza that is below the equilibrium price of pizza, causing a shortage of pizza a surplus of pizza no shortage of pizza none of the above In an unregulated market, which of the following will occur as a result of sudden destruction of a large proportion of the supply of housing? (Hint: This will cause a decrease in the supply of housing.) Drawing a diagram will help you. a decrease in demand for rental housing a surplus of rental housing higher rental prices a decrease in rental prices

Assignment 2: Stakeholder Analysis

Due Week 5 and worth 150 points

Write a five to six (5-6) page paper in which you:

(Note: Refer to Review Question 8 located at the end of Chapter 3 for criteria 1-3. Select two (2) editorials / essays / columns (by staff or freelance writers) on a current issue of public policy from two (2) different publications (large metropolitan or national newspaper such as Washington Post or the New York Times or national magazines such as Newsweek, Time, and The New Republic.)

  1. Apply the procedures for argumentation analysis (located in Chapter 8) to display contending positions and underlying assumptions for the content of Review Question 8.
  2. Rate the assumptions and plot them according to their plausibility and importance. (Refer to Figure 3.16, “Distribution of warrant by plausibility and importance.”)
  3. Determine which arguments are the most plausible. Provide a rationale for your views.

(Note: Refer to Demonstration Exercise 1 located at the end of Chapter 3 for criteria 4-6. Examine Box 3.0 – Conducting a Stakeholder Analysis. Choose one of the following policy issues in the U.S. gun control, illegal drugs, medical insurance fraud, and environmental protection of waterways, job creation, affordable health care, or Medicare.)

  1. Apply the procedures for stakeholder analysis presented in Box 3.0 “Conducting a Stakeholder Analysis” to generate a list of at least five to ten (5-10) stakeholders who affect or are affected by problems in the issue area chosen for analysis. (Note: Refer to page 111 of the textbook for a step-by-step process on stakeholder analysis.)
  2. After creating a cumulative frequency distribution from the list, discuss new ideas generated by each stakeholder. (Note: The ideas may be objectives, alternatives, outcomes causes, etc.; ideas should not be duplicates.)
  3. Write an analysis of the results of the frequency distribution that answers the following questions: (a) Does the line graph flatten out? (b) If so, after how many stakeholders? (c) What conclusions can be drawn about the policy problems in the issue area? (Note: Compare your work with Case Study 3.1 at the end of the chapter.)
  4. Include at least two (2) peer-reviewed references (no more than five [5] years old) from material outside the textbook to support your views regarding the proposed U.S. response to the conflict in Bosnia. Note: Appropriate peer-reviewed references include scholarly articles and governmental Websites. Do not use open source Websites such as Wikipedia, Sparknotes.com, Ask.com, and similar Websites are not acceptable resources.

Background
PROVISION Healthcare Technologies manufactures patient image wands (hardware with underlying software) used by healthcare providers (primarily hospitals and physician offices) as part of larger systems to test and monitor patients’ body functions. The wand has been on the market for ten months and a new release of the wand’s software isn’t expected for another eight months. The company is approximately 150 people total, and has been in existence for just over five years. They have several products on the market, but the newest is by far the most complex product they have created. They are privately-owned and are financially stable.
Project Background
New government regulations have just been issued regarding patient safety. PROVISION must modify the wand software to incorporate this new functionality within six months or face steep fines. PROVISION has decided to move up its next wand release to meet the government deadlines. It has also decided to incorporate some new functionality and make some software fixes as part of this release.
