Ashford 3: – Week 2 – Discussion 1
Your initial discussion thread is due on Day 3 (Thursday) and you have until Day 7 (Monday) to respond to your classmates. Your grade will reflect both the quality of your initial post and the depth of your responses. Reference the Discussion Forum Grading Rubric for guidance on how your discussion will be evaluated.
Locating Resources
The ability to locate and utilize information relative to Health and Human Services is an important component of many health and human service jobs. Some of the areas included in HHS programs are: Legal/illegal immigration Poverty Violence in the Media Unemployment Alcoholism Gambling Sexual Harassment Criminal Justice Hunger / Homelessness Mental Illness Health
As an example, the area of “poverty” was selected from the above list to locate information and relevant reports. To accomplish this, the following was entered into a search engine (such as Google or MSN): “Health and human services and programs dealing with poverty.” One of the 1, 490,000 “hits” was titled: “Poverty Guidelines, Research and Measurement.” Upon searching this website, an elaborate set of focus subtitles was found. Under the heading “Poverty Research Centers” six more references were discovered. As the interest was focused on discovering what information was available, the search centered on “The National Poverty Center.” An examination on this site under that heading yielded numerous areas regarding new research opportunities, informing the policy community, and training for young researchers. Your specific assignment follows. Start with an exploration of what can be found in several of the areas listed above. Then, identify one area and prepare a descriptive post outlining the information in this site. You may want to experiment with various areas in order to understand the unusually large number of resources / programs, but also the kinds of information. Respond to at least two of your classmates’ postings.

Ashford 2: – Week 1 – Discussion 2
Art Interpretation: The Arnolfini Portrait
Reflect back on your interpretation of The Arnolfini Portrait, by Jan van Eyck, circa 1434 in the “Post Your Introduction” discussion.
Watch the video “The Italian Influence on the Northern Renaissance: Jan van Eyck’s Portrait of Arnolfini and His Bride.” After watching the video, respond to the following in your discussion post: What key components of the work of art were discussed in the interpretation? What were some details shared regarding the method, tools, subjects, and social implications of the work of art? What was one example of symbolism identified in the work of art?
Now that you’ve explored an example of an in-depth analysis of a work of art, how did this analysis differ from your own initial interpretation? What components of the analysis were absent from your own initial interpretation?
Your initial post must at least 200 words in length.
Review several of your classmates’ posts. By Day 7, respond to at least two classmates by sharing another interesting component of the artwork or example of symbolism that was shared in the video that they have not yet addressed. You must provide a substantive response.
Assignment 1: Case Study #1
Overview
Throughout this course, you’re learning how to use problem solving and self and social awareness skills to practice the key concepts of psychology. You’re discovering how self and social awareness and problem solving work together to help you understand the perspectives of others, examine situations objectively, and use evidence to develop and make decisions. With this case study assignment, you’ll have the chance to put your skills to work!
Read the case study below and use your problem solving and self and social awareness skills to help a co-worker work through a difficult situation.
Case Study and Questions
Gloria is a recent college graduate and a single mom to 16-year-old Gary. Gloria and Gary used to be close. But recently, Gloria has noticed that Gary is only focused on what his friends think about him. Gary recently snuck out of his bedroom window and went to a party when he was supposed to be studying for a big exam. Gloria caught him coming home and smelled alcohol on his breath and marijuana on his clothes. Gloria is shocked and appalled by her son’s recent behavior and grounded him for two weeks.
Gloria comes to you because she needs some advice on how to handle her son’s poor choices. Using what you have learned about the adolescent brain and social development in Chapter 3 of the webtext, answer the questions below to help Gloria understand why her son is making such poor choices, and pose some recommendations to help her solve her problem:
1. What happens to teen brains that make it difficult for someone like Gary to weigh risk and reward?
2. Why may Gary value his peers more than his mom?
3. What specific strategies or advice would you recommend that Gloria can do to help her son to make better decision
4. Place yourself in Gloria’s shoes; how do you think Gloria is feeling? How can understanding her feelings help you offer constructive advice?

Ashford 5: – Week 4 – Assignment
The Agrarian Solution
Write a paper evaluating agrarianism as a spiritual response to the environmental crisis. First, analyze agrarianism’s diagnosis of the root cause of human alienation from nature and its proposed solution. Examine how the agrarian solution differs from the solutions to the environmental crisis proposed by other environmental movements such as deep ecology. Finally, evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of these movements, determining which movement you find to be the most adequate in response to the current environmental situation. (If you find none of the responses we studied adequate, defend your own ideas of the best response while also critiquing the movements we studied.) At each step, support all your interpretations with evidence from the assigned texts and media. (Remember, there is more than one good way to answer these questions.)
Your paper must be four to five pages in length (excluding title and reference pages), double spaced, and formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center. Defend your claims with references to specific passages from at least three of the required and recommended readings. For information regarding APA samples and tutorials, visit the Ashford Writing Center, located within the Learning Resources tab on the left navigation menu.
Carefully review the Grading Rubric for the criteria that will be used to evaluate your assignment.
Group Assignment: Inductive research can be easily conducted by students. Choose a common social activity (e.g., grocery shopping, eating in a restaurant or cafeteria, waiting in line at a bank, courting rituals at a dance club). Members of the group should go into the field for an hour and observe how people conduct themselves in this activity. Members should do this separately (or at least in sub-groups of no larger than two members). Students should be attentive to patterns that emerge from the observation, but should try not to engage actors or make their observation too obvious (as this may bias results!) After their hour of field work, students should meet to discuss the patterns they observed. During the next class period, each group should present empirical generalizations based on these observations. If possible (but not required), students might then find some theory or research that corresponds to these generalizations and report as to whether their observations make sense given pre-existing research or theory. Each group member must provide a brief (one page) summary of his/her observations that was brought to the group for discussion. Groups will present their information in class.
We are socialized at every stage in life to conform to our gender identity. Societal reinforcement of tendencies of gender identity is relentless. For example, in hospitals, little girls are wrapped in pink and little boys in blue. This difference in colors influences how we learn and how we internalize our role in our society.
Girls tend to grow up to play feminine roles and boys tend to grow up to play masculine roles. This differentiation of gender identity has implications in social stratification. The videos given below will provide you with a better understanding of the differentiation of sexual identity from an earlier generation.
Search for and watch an episode of at least one of the following shows. You may find these videos using a variety of search methods including visiting your local library, using Netflix or your local video store, or searching on YouTube. If you have difficulty locating an episode of one of the following shows, contact your instructor for assistance in finding an alternative.I Love LucyAll in the FamilyThe Mickey Mouse ClubThe HoneymoonersLeave it to BeaverFather Knows BestGilligan’s IslandThe Brady BunchI Dream of Jeannie
As you watch the video, ask yourself the following questions:To what extent have things changed and to what extent have they remained the same in regards to gender roles, expectations, division, and identity from the time this show was originally popular and today? How conscious and sensitive are the characters regarding gender prejudice, power inequality, and subordination?Did they take inequality of the sexes for granted?
Based on your readings and understanding that you have gathered after watching the above-noted video, write a short biographical description of your life if you were to wake up tomorrow morning in the time period of the video you watched and find you have a different gender identity. Write a description of how you lived your life a day after your hypothetical change in gender as you answer the following questions:Discuss how you would react on finding out that your sex is opposite. Would you feel a sense of relief, indifference, or elation? Why?Discuss three ways your attitude towards the opposite sex was enlightened or would change as a result of what you learned from this project. If you would not change your attitude, why?Write down the ideas and attitudes you have taken for granted a member of your actual gender. Consider how your roles at home and in the office would change if you were a member of the opposite gender.Relate the ideas of sexism and racism to the videos. How do you think sexism and racism have changed since the 1950s?
