PHI 208 Week 3 Discussion Prompt

One of Kant’s formulations of the Categorical Imperative says that one should always treat humanity, whether in oneself or in another, always as an end and never merely as a means. Consider a specific example from the world of business, either one that you have directly encountered or one you heard about, in which a company honored this principle, and consider an example in which a company failed to honor this principle. Be sure to clearly explain your example with respect to Kant’s theory, and refer to the other readings on business ethics when appropriate. If you find the example from a source on the internet or in an article be sure to share that with your classmates. Discuss whether or not you believe that businesses could actually run according to a Kantian moral framework or if they must necessarily break Kant’s laws in order to function according to business principles.

Argumentative Paper Structure

[Argument followed by refutation structure]

Argumentative Question – “Are law enforcement cameras an invasion of privacy?”

Introduction (1 paragraph – 110-120 words)

  • Hook (something to introduce the topic and grab the reader’s attention) [Not necessary; Optional]
  • Background (5 or 6 pieces of information about the topic; use the WH questions as a starting point)
  • A couple of sentences to present an overview of the debate/controversy and the parties involved. Make sure to emphasize the importance of the debate and why it matters.
  • Thesis statement which clearly states the main argument as well as three supporting reasons (properly phrased in one sentence)

Body Paragraph 1 (1 paragraph – 110-120 words)

  • Topic/Reason # 1; Topic sentence (a single clear and short sentence that identifies the reason)
  • Explanation (you need to clarify for the reader exactly what the reason is, and how it connects to your main argument. This could take from one to three or more sentences depending on how complicated the reason is)
  • Evidence (in the form of facts and statistics)
  • Examples (preferably two: one general and one specific. They can be either real or theoretical)
  • Expert opinion (quote and make sure to introduce the quote by identifying the expert)
    • You must discuss the quote and present an interpretation of it for the reader. Make sure to connect it to your reason and main argument.
  • Interpretation and analysis
    • This is the part of each paragraph where you present your own opinion and demonstrate your critical thinking skills. First, you need to connect together everything that you have presented so far in the paragraph to persuade the reader that your reason is correct. Then you need to demonstrate that your reason supports your overall argument.
  • Transition sentence
    • In one sentence, provide a transition to the next paragraph.

Body Paragraph 2 (1 paragraph – 110-120 words)

  • Topic/Reason # 2; Topic sentence (a single clear and short sentence that identifies the reason)

  • Evidence (in the form of facts and statistics)
  • Examples (preferably two: one general and one specific. They can be either real or theoretical)

First, you need to connect together everything that you have presented so far in the paragraph to persuade the reader that your reason is correct. Then you need to demonstrate that your reason supports your overall argument.
  • Transition sentence
    • In one sentence, provide a transition to the next paragraph.

Body Paragraph 3: Refutation (1 paragraph – 110-120 words)

  • Topic sentence (a single clear and short sentence that identifies the other side’s main argument and names one of its supporters)
  • Explanation (you need to clarify for the reader exactly what the counterargument is, and how it connects to the other side’s main argument. This could take from one to three or more sentences depending on how complicated the counterargument is)
  • Refutation. In the remainder of the paragraph, you need to present a reason (or reasons) which refutes the counterargument. You must use evidence (in the form of facts, statistics, and examples) to support your refutation.
  • Interpretation and analysis/concluding sentence
    • This is the part of each paragraph where you present your own opinion and demonstrate your critical thinking skills. You need to connect together everything that you have presented so far in the paragraph to persuade the reader that the counterargument is wrong and that your main argument is the correct one.

Conclusion (110-120 words)

  • Restate your main argument (i.e. your answer to the research question, which is your thesis statement)
  • Summarize the main idea of each of your body paragraphs in no more than one sentence each.
  • In one or two sentences, present an overall conclusion to your essay. This is where you tie everything together to persuade the reader that your argument is the correct one.
  • Final thought

The last sentence of the research paper should leave the reader with something to think about. Make a prediction, offer a solution, make a call to action

ECE 315 week 4 Assignment

Ashford 5: – Week 4 – Assignment

Literacy Lesson Plan

Create a developmentally appropriate literacy lesson plan that supports language and literacy experiences.

Include the following in your lesson plan, using the template: Identify the lesson objectives.  Describe the alignment with language and literacy      standards.  Describe the lesson procedure. This should be detailed      so that another teacher could use this to implement the lesson.  Explain strategies to support children learning a      second language.  Explain modifications for students with special needs.  Identify appropriate materials.  Use the textbook      and at least one outside resource, with citations in APA format.  Create an assessment plan.  How will you measure      improvement?

Your one- to two-page lesson plan should utilize the template and be in-depth so another reader would know exactly what to do if they were teaching the lesson. It must be formatted according to APA style, citing two to three scholarly resources (including the course text). Since you will be using a template, it is not necessary to include a title and cover page.

Since this is an assignment that you will be able to use in your future role, share your lesson plan with the class through the Doc Sharing tab.  Doing this will allow others to see various language lessons. This will provide you with peer feedback that could help you to continue to grow. That said, you will still need to upload your assignment for grading as a Word file.

When you submit your assignments each week, they will be returned to you with specific feedback. This feedback should be used to revise the assignment for the Final Project. Please make the necessary corrections and save for Week Five use in the Final Project.

Carefully review the Grading Rubric for the criteria that will be used to evaluate your assignment.

M3 Assignment 2: LASA 1: Course Project Task I

Your local town is addressing the following issues in its law-making: Should people under 18 be subjected to legal curfews or restricted driving privileges? Should libraries be required to install filtering software or otherwise censor the materials that they provide? Should insurance companies in your state be required to pay for breast reconstruction, birth control pills, or Viagra? Should the use of camera phones be banned in local gymnasiums or other locations?

As an active citizen, you ask to research and present to the town’s citizens one of the above issues. The governing body has agreed and asks that your presentation be specifically designed to show citizens of the community how and why one of the issues above is controversial and how to be educated consumers of information regarding this issue. They ask this because the citizens will be voting on these issues in future elections and the governing body wants its citizens to be properly educated on these topics.

In your presentation, make sure you include the following:

Remember, you are giving a presentation to an audience that does not know much, if anything, about your topic. Explain the issue, including definitions of common terms involved in the issue and why this issue is controversial. Identify and describe three to four different conclusions that are drawn when arguments related to the issue are made. Summarize the kinds of evidence typically used for each constructed argument related to the issue. Be sure to discuss the reasons these kinds of evidence are used and/or are most effective. Analyze how each of the different conclusions regarding the topic use particular evidence to support their claims, paying particular attention to analyzing how the conclusions rely on different facts, different sources of evidence, or different reasoning from other conclusions. In other words, explain why certain groups would use a particular type of evidence while an opposing group would use a different type of evidence, or how two groups can represent that same data in two completely different ways. Utilize at least three different sources and properly cite them throughout the presentation.

The presentation should be 8 to 10 slides long, and each slide should have complete, formally written slide notes (proper grammar, APA formatting, and academic tone) for record-keeping purposes and in the event there are citizens who are deaf or hard-of-hearing at your presentation. The slide notes must include proper APA citation of sources, proper paragraphing, and proper grammar and tone. Visually, the slides should be easy to read. A properly APA-formatted reference page must be the last slide of your presentation. See the rubric for more specific requirements of the presentation.

Ashford 3: – Week 2 – Discussion 1

Your initial discussion thread is due on Day 3 (Thursday) and you have until Day 7 (Monday) to respond to your classmates. Reference the Discussion Forum Grading Rubric for guidance on how your discussion will be evaluated.

Nature   vs. Nurture

The debate concerning the influence of inherited traits and abilities compared to the influence of environment on human development has been argued for decades.  The required reading this week provides information on the extent of which human development and behavior is the result of nature (heredity) and of nurture (environmental influences).

In this discussion you will debate nature vs. nurture.  Below is your assigned debate grouping by the first letter of your last name: A-M: Proponent of Nature  N-Z: Proponent of Nurture

Due by Day 3: For this debate, you must develop a persuasive, research-based argument showing the extent to which your assigned influence affects development.  Be sure to utilize both the course text as well as other scholarly resources to support your argument.  Remember, you are arguing that either nature or nurture is the most important influence on development.

Due by Day 5: Review your classmates’ posts and respond to at least one who is arguing from the opposing side. Negate their argument by providing examples that support your argument.

Due by Day 6: Follow-up to any responses that have been posted to your argument, continuing the debate.

Due by Day 7: Your final post will be an articulation of your own beliefs about nature vs. nurture. What, in your opinion, is the most reasonable one-paragraph resolution of this controversy?
