 For your assignment this week, you will detail key aspects of development and discuss the role of nature and nurture in development.  Complete the weekly reading, review Chapter 7 from Week One of the course, and view the video Breaking the Wall of Nature and Nurture: How Genes and Environment Combine to Affect Our Life Course.  Then, address the following: Summarize your childhood and family. Include the      following information:  Where were you born (e.g., state, country, or       geographical region)?  Do you have siblings?  Where do you fall in the birth order of your family?  Where did you grow up?  What was your childhood like?  How did your understanding of        self and gender begin to develop?  What role did gender        stereotypes play?  What types of toys were you encouraged to play        with? What activities were you encouraged to do?  What was your adolescence like?  Was it a time of       storm and stress, or was it a smooth transition?  Detail the nature versus nurture controversy from the      scientific evidence.  Address the following: 

· Define nature and nurture. 

· Describe which (either nature or nurture) you feel had a greater impact on your development.   

· How did nature and nurture work together to influence who you are today in terms of personality, sexuality, and gender?

For this essay, you will develop a close reading of a passage from one of the assigned three novels that you read and completed forum assignments for this Module. Guidelines: Essay #3 — Close Reading – The Novel

Requirements

• Find a beginning, middle or end passage in your novel that has your word or concept in it from Forum 14. Choose between 10 and 15 sentences. It must be from a beginning middle or end passage.
• Find a Discussion Forum Under Week 7 for your brainstorming for this novel. You can post anything you want for help in choosing your passage, formulating your central idea and thesis, developing your interpretation, or formatting your essay.
• Once you have a passage, you can choose one of the following prompts to compose your essay:
  • Do a close reading of the passage (review my lectures–written and video–on how to construct a close reading.
  • Apply one of the literary lenses to the passage and argue how you would approach a close reading of the passage through the lens.
  • Argue how this passage speaks to you in some way about the meaning of the novel and your own life.
• Whichever prompt you choose, include a works cited page and format your essay in MLA style.
• The essay–excluding the passage and supplemental materials–should be about 1,000 words.

(You must get a sense of the difference between an early, a middle and an end passage. And you must include a discussion of the location anywhere within your essay.)

Supplemental Materials

1. A final outline that duplicates the central idea, thesis and topic sentences within the essay.

2. A statement on which prompt you chose and why you chose it.

The Bluest Eye is an intriguing story that involves a nine-year-old and 10-year-old children who live with their parents, thus experiencing an undercurrent love and stability in their home. According to my selected passage, Claudia faces various challenges as a child as well as powerlessness of being black and poor. She was raised in an era where children were not seen in the society and were considered inferior. During that era black people and children experienced powerlessness and Claudia was impossible to separate from the bracket. The fear of poverty and homelessness is still evident in the contemporary world more than the fear of discrimination. The use of imagery in the passage to illustrate on the influence of culture on young culture black girls.
