This assignment should be 5-6 pages total Robert and Christine, a Hispanic-American couple in their early 30’s, were referred by Robert’s managed care insurance for family therapy. The couple’s 2 children are present for the intake session: their 10 year old son and  8 year old daughter. Christine complains that their son, “ has no respect for me and calls me awful names, just like his father”.  Robert smirks while Christine talks. He tells you that Christine is, “just like her mother, lazy and fat”. During the psychosocial assessment, you learn that Robert’s father left him when he was 11 years old and that he was the caretaker of his younger siblings while his mother worked 2 jobs.  Christine was raised by both parents, in a very strict, abusive home.  Her father was an alcoholic and her mother told her and her sister to not speak to anyone about the abuse in the home. You notice the daughter hiding in the corner with fear in her eyes during the session.

Ethical issue paper

In this course, you have looked at classical ethical theories of utilitarianism, deontology, and virtue ethics. You have also examined different perspectives on ethical issues introduced by relativism, ethical egoism, and emotivism. For this paper, you will apply these theories and perspectives to a current issue.

Choose an ethical issue to write about. You may choose from the list below or, with approval from the instructor, select a different socially-relevant topic. It is recommended that you choose a topic that you are familiar with or that you have some interest in exploring further. For the purposes of this paper, your topic should pertain to a current area of interest in the news and/or government policy forums.

Issues

•Human trafficking

In your paper, you will apply ethical theories and perspectives to the issue that you select. You do not have to use all six, but you should apply at least two ethical theories and at least one ethical perspective in your paper. Make sure that you write primarily on ethical topics and concepts, aiming to be both balanced and intellectually driven in your work. You may share your personal views, but do not rely on opinions (yours or those offered by others) to make your case. Think about the evidence that helps to make your case and use it.

Address the following questions:

•What are the ethical issues?

•Where are there breaches of ethical behavior?

•How could each ethical theory you cite help people think about what constitutes virtuous or ethical behavior?

Answer the questions at the end of the the handout and submit your responses to each here in list format.

Q1. Outline Harris’s Cultural Materialist analysis of why Cows are Sacred in India.

Include his environmental, economic, historical etc… data that supports his argument.

Q.2 Harris states that worshipping cows is a rational cultural adaptation. and it is our job to understand the rationality, explain what he means.

Q.3Native Americans of the great plains never worshiped the buffalo. Based on what Harris has said, can you think of reasons why that might be so.

Q.4 One implication of Harris’s article is that other deeply held religious beliefs or customs throughout the world might also have very important economic, health and social functions or uses. In fact, this might be an important reason that such beliefs persist. Can you think of any examples?

Field trip reports for Art class

complete a visual analysis of a work of art found in a museum or gallery. Report #1 will be about an Asian work of art, #2 about an African, Australian, or Oceanic work of art, and #3 about a Pre-Columbian or Native American work of art. You may do #1 and #2, #2 and #3, or #1 and #3, Write a 400-600 word paper for each assignment. Choose something (painting, sculpture, architecture, ceramics, textiles, baskets) that appeals to you, but it must be an example from one of the cultures we’ve studied. I would appreciate a post card, photograph or sketch of the piece submitted along with your report. Although this assignment is to be based on what you observe with careful study, some research might be necessary.

Visual analysis is using formal means to describe a work of art. Your description should be based on observation, so take notes when you go to the museum. Use appropriate art terminology which you have learned in this or previous art history courses. Include personal interpretation, if based upon thought, but not reaction based upon emotion.

The objective of this assignment, and of this or any art history course, is to teach the student how to look at art. In tandem with that is the objective of giving you the skills needed to understand the art you see, whether in a museum, gallery, on the street, in your home or office. To do this, you must learn a new vocabulary, and be assertive and confident and don’t rely upon explanatory text; trust your own abilities. When confronting a work of art look at it carefully: first at the overall image, then at the details. Look for clues that help you determine the style that’s helps you assign the culture of origin. Try to figure out why you like it or why you don’t, then record you observations.
